for it seems now more certain than ever that the bloody experience of vietnam is to end in a stalemate but it is increasingly clear to this reporter that the only rational way out then will be to negotiate not as victors but as an honorable people who lived up to their pledge to defend democracy and did the best they could when it comes to civil defense through the ages one of the most important topics is that of air defense that is defending against attacking aircraft so today let's take a look at some of the doctrine and lessons learned in the field of defense from aerial attack and what better way to do that than not through the eyes of just united states military doctrine but also the doctrine of one of the united states most formidable foes the viet cong now before we begin we have to yet again point out how large of a topic this is the vietnam war was the origin of most western suppression of enemy air defense doctrine and also the national liberation forces commonly known as the viet cong or vietnamese communists was one of the most dedicated civil defense organizations in recent memory we thought that this unique combination of factors makes a good platform to discuss the concepts of passive air defense from the side of the americans and that of the vietnamese if this seems a bit disorganized it's because it is us military doctrine is always written from the perspective of a global superpower that has near peer concerns or is trying to counter an insurgency but when it comes to average american citizens learning and studying warfare we often have to come at this from a different perspective so there's a mismatch we're studying the doctrine of the superpower but we have the resources and capabilities of the small hamlet in northern vietnam and when it comes to studying the vietnam war it's really easy to get overwhelmed not only was the war in vietnam an extremely complex and horrific conflict but so is the topic of passive air defense doctrine in this field has been developed ever since the first world war when aircraft were first used in mass to attack either other aircraft or ground targets so please understand that we cannot cover everything under the sun in the field of defending against an aerial attack but we can cover the basics so let's get to it when it comes to defending against attacking aircraft the preparations for such are usually divided into two categories passive defenses and active defenses in short passive defenses are the things that you can do to passively protect yourself or your unit from an attack and active defenses are mostly things like shooting back and directly engaging the hostile aircraft today we will be talking about passive defenses as active defenses is a whole other thing that we will talk about in a different video but understanding passive air defense is key to discussing more kinetic options later and to begin talking about passive air defense we actually briefly have to talk about something that's more in the camp of active air defense this seems a bit backwards but it will make sense later the absolute first step in passive air defense is to make the decision of whether or not to engage an aircraft if it begins attacking you this decision needs to be made now because it dictates everything else including your passive defenses now this decision is not simply a yes or no question but you need to get the criteria set before you even consider anything else you might decide okay we're going to engage rotary wing aircraft helicopters if they pop up over that ridge line over there but we're not going to engage fixed-wing fighters or you might decide alright we're going to attack helicopters that land at these potential helicopter landing zones near us but if they just fly by overhead on a recon don't take the bait and to show how important this concept is let's take a look at the doctrine of the vietcong fighting in vietnam cambodia and laos during the vietnam war captured vc documents indicate that charlie would place high priority on observation again with their doctrine pointing out how important it is to decide first whether or not to engage one captured document from early in the war states that in case aircraft are flying over densely populated areas where people are working or are gathered in a meeting and have not dropped bombs air defense elements are not permitted to shoot unless the people have withdrawn after that shooted aircraft only when they begin bombardment or landing of troops in this example the vietcong encouraged their fighters not to engage because engaging the aircraft would only reveal their position and the people that would bear the brunt of american retaliation were the civilians living in the village civilians that might not look too kindly upon the vc the next time they showed up if the vc brought nothing but destruction with them this is not just a confirmation of how important passive air defense is but also the importance that the viet cong placed on winning and keeping the hearts and minds of the local populace which is something that is absolutely vital in every single facet of conflict yet somehow overlooked in many cases so whatever is decided whatever criteria or scenarios are decided on as soon as that decision is made ensure that it is clearly disseminated to the entire team or unit make sure everyone knows what the plan is and what their role in that plan is now for the real meat of the matter passive air defense most passive air defense is intended to protect you from attack without you actually doing much work at all i.e passive right and as such passive air defense itself is broken up into two main categories attack avoidance making sure the attack never happens in the first place and damage mitigation measures to decrease damage that might occur if preventing the attack fails so up first avoiding the attack in the first place the main way of doing this is camouflage if we take a look at what the americans think on this various us military manuals further break this down into yet more doctrine to memorize for instance army training publication 3-01.8 breaks this down into three further categories sitting discipline and construction sitting is the practice of selecting the best spot for an air defense again like we mentioned in the beginning if you have made the decision to engage or not engage attacking aircraft you might choose different spots depending on what you decide again the vietcong had this concept down pat for charlie campsites and temporary hole-up sites were raided based on three criteria number one the hamlets of the village and the area surrounding them must provide terrain favorable to defensive operations number two the areas surrounding the defended perimeter must provide little protection for attacking gvn troops and number three finally there must be no obstacles such as rivers or highways that impede a subsequent withdrawal so for the vietcong the concept was pretty simple a good site afforded good protection for them little or no protection for the enemy and was easy to escape from if things got hairy this is not just useful for air defense but for defense against ground attack as well we can also see how important it was to choose a good sight based on whether or not we plan to engage aircraft a site that offers the most protection from an attack might not be the same site that offers the best chance of success if we ourselves need to engage for instance a position deep down in a steep valley will limit the number of vectors that an aircraft can use to attack us due to terrain so if we're trying to get as much cover as possible deep down in the valley might be an option however if we're planning to engage high up on the ridgelines might be a better place where we can engage aircraft from a similar altitude that aircraft might be flying at or better yet fire down upon helicopters that might be landing in the valley below this is very similar to what the vietcong did during the battle of outback though the terrain for this battle was mostly flat the vc were able to pick positions that offered the most defense from americans landing troops in helicopters by exercising patience and exploiting the overconfidence and over reliance on technology by attacking arvin and u.s forces the viet cong were able to successfully engage 15 american helicopters landing in the rice paddies across from their position destroying five helicopters in the process and securing the first major victory for the viet cong in the vietnam war we will examine this pivotal battle further when we talk about active air defenses but the key takeaway for now is that the viet cong through superior passive air defense were able to camouflage and conceal their true numbers which were much larger than u.s military intelligence indicated the vc were also able to conceal their positions until arvind forces were just 30 yards away positions that were specifically located to provide concentration of fire on helicopter landing zones passive air defense is crucial for active air defense to work and this battle proved it in the prelude to this battle the viet cong picked the absolute best terrain to defend and their choice of sitting in the right spot ensured their success up next is discipline discipline refers to overall camouflage discipline not leaving tracks that an aircraft can spot using the best personal camouflage and camouflaging equipment as best one can again the vc demonstrated superior tactics in this category as well which they are infamous for the vietcong have been one of if not the most disciplined fighting force that the united states has ever fought against this is not just because the vc were willing to accept astounding casualty rates but because they rigidly adhered to camouflage practices and this discipline goes back to before the viet cong even existed the french fighting the viet minh the predecessor to the viet cong in indochina in the 1950s learned this all too well in his book street without joy the french debacle in indochina bernard fall describes this camouflage discipline very accurately in the following passage he writes here and there a small group of men advancing single file through the high grass was caught in the open by a french reconnaissance plane but by the time the plane had made a second sweep the enemy would have disappeared from the path and blended into the surrounding countryside in view of the french mastery of the air the viet minh troops had made a veritable fetish out of camouflage the greatest pains would be taken even in safe rear areas to camouflage anything which could offer the french a suitable target this constant emphasis on camouflage carried out relentlessly even when at rest made the communist soldier as well as the civilian population unbeatable masters at the game the palm leaf helmet of the communist soldier with its constantly worn camouflage net on it was the major trademark of the regular in addition every regular vietmen soldier on the march carried a large wire mesh disk on his back and head adorned with the foliage of the terrain through which he was passing as soon as the terrain changed it was a responsibility of each soldier to change the camouflage of the man ahead of him as the surroundings changed rarely would a communist unit be in too much of a hurry to not take the time to change camouflage when it left a dark green forest to enter a lighter green grassland area or the marshy brown of a rice field about to be harvested i just know the little bastards are somewhere around here was the standard complaint of the french reconnaissance pilots but go and find them in this mess finally we come to construction constructing both cover and concealment as required using natural materials hiding blending and disguising one's position from overhead observation in the years following the war the elaborate jungle fortifications of the vietcong called home have become legendary and the dedication to surviving b-52 bombing raids was a huge part of the average vietcong soldier's worries in fact chiron nu tang wrote a lot about this in his book a vietcong memoir an inside account of the vietnam war and its aftermath though he was a very high ranking individual by the time he had to resort to hiding in the jungle he spends a lot of time talking about how terrifying and devastating the b-52 bombing raids were and how much time soldiers spent defending against them for the most part vietcong soldiers would prefer to egress from the area entirely in advance of a b-52 bombing run but truong recounts just how much dedication was given to the constant digging of earthworks tunnels and jungle fortifications he writes when neither sick nor fighting the gorillas spend their time building bunkers raising vegetables and training constant training it was a life of hiding and preparation hiding from attacks preparing to meet attacks or training to carry out their own missions if there was a half-day break in some movement either away from or toward an engagement they would dig trenches and bunkers within this category we also find the use of decoys to lure enemy aircraft into attacking positions that are empty rather than the truly important positions again captured viet cong documents from 1962 and 63 highlight the importance that charlie placed on decoys early in the war recently enemy artillery shelling and strikes have been relentlessly conducted against our routes combat fortifications sites of repeated attacks by friendly forces frequently used assembly areas such as road junctions and intersections uncamouflaged trenches etc to prevent the enemy from bombarding the villages we must use deception by setting up dummy troop locations in little frequented areas far away from roads and hamlets these dummy positions must be camouflaged but not thoroughly enough to make it impossible for the enemy to see them a dummy anti-aircraft position will be set up two or three hundred meters away in order to attract the enemy fire and avoid his destruction of villages and hamlets now to me all of this is well and good but breaking things out into sitting discipline and construction sound kind of redundant to me the entire subject of attack avoidance can be summed up in one word camouflage so if you want to skip reading a couple of chapters of army manuals you can summarize this very simply and quickly attack avoidance is simply following the absolute best camouflage practices which will reduce the chances of an adversary using the factors of recognition to locate and identify you plus the caveat of choosing the best location will allow you to either engage aircraft or have cover from attacking aircraft depending on what you want to do so camouflage your position as best you can and if you need to engage aircraft choose a good spot for it the other category in the field of passive air defense is damage mitigation now camouflage itself is a form of damage mitigation after all an enemy cannot usually hit what they cannot see but the other way is dispersion dispersion is one of the most important basic soldier tasks in existence and it is one of the hardest things for untrained or scared personnel to do dispersion is simply the act of spreading out your forces so that a single munition cannot cause many casualties clumped together in groups and that creates a juicy target for even just a single 30 millimeter round again we see how the vietcong used dispersion to their advantage in conjunction with camouflage one viet kong soldier writes next to hoamai is ben min campsite this campsite is regarded as a very good one the site is large and is covered with dense foliage too the width of the campsite gives us a special advantage it confuses the gvn artillery about where to shell now the concept of dispersion is an utterly terrifying concept for those who are not experienced with getting shot at for a living for civilians or non-combatants living in our modern world there is nothing so terrifying as lying in a foxhole alone while an aircraft is attacking your position humans naturally want to be together with their team when they're getting shot at so care must be taken to ensure that everyone disperses appropriately despite the fear this also often applies to professional soldiers as well especially those who are used to having aerial superiority on their side and off the other way around the good news is that attacks from ground to aircraft are very survivable if the right precautions are taken of course there are thousands of possible munitions that aircraft can carry but for the most part your average pilot is going to be looking for juicy targets equipment vehicles emplacements fortifications really anything but a single guy in a foxhole and if your group or unit is nothing but a bunch of dispersed individuals and foxholes that will make you a very hard target so let's recap passive air defense consists of two parts attack avoidance and damage mitigation before doing anything decide on the criteria for fighting back and engaging the attacking aircraft avoiding the attack is as simple as embracing the best tenets of camouflage and based on your decision to engage picking the best location in which to either take cover or engage the aircraft and just in case you can't avoid an attack disperse your forces as much as feasible in order to mitigate the damage that does occur from an attack so as we can see it's pretty simple but let's briefly sidestep for a minute and talk about special considerations for convoys convoys being attacked from the air and from the ground have been a kind of hot topic lately so we can briefly touch on some specific tactics that can be used to passively protect convoys from aerial attack convoy defense is another big topic but since we're talking about it now let's go over some passive air defense tactics for convoys convoys by their very nature are very different from static locations in placements or installations convoys naturally consist of large objects all arranged in a line usually traveling on a road surface that is different from their color so we've got some serious breaches of camouflage doctrine here right off the bat if we look at the factors of recognition we can see how troubling this is position vehicles are positioned on the most conspicuous thing in the area the road shape long lines of vehicles can be seen from extreme distances from the air and naturally draw the eye shadow the shadow underneath vehicles in combination with a smooth road surface is very eye-catching texture vehicles will have a different texture than that of the road surface especially in the rain color unless driving on a dirt road in the desert it's unlikely that vehicles will match the color of the road's surface movement convoys by their very nature have to move and the dust that is often kicked up by convoys can be seen for miles away shine windshields and windows can't really be covered up because they are needed to drive and for security presenting shine hazards so we can see when it comes to passive air defenses for the convoy we have got quite a few challenges to overcome choosing good routes that offer natural concealment in the first place would be preferred though when it comes to military convoys even the convoy commander might not have the authority to deviate the route so in these cases you might be stuck if you can choose your route you will obviously have to weigh your priorities you might want to stick to tarmac to avoid dust being kicked up but if the only paved road in the area is an ied alley you might want to put up with the aerial threats that dust brings and roll across country then again you might be more concerned about leaving tracks or even worse getting stuck or bogged down in the mud on the open field or any other number of problems that might come up by traveling cross country the point is when planning your convoy route make sure to take these things into consideration we're not just concerned about ieds anymore there are certainly threats in the skies now too the timing of the convoy can also help greatly scheduling the convoy for night time even in an age where no one truly owns the night anymore would be preferred nighttime conditions make detection more difficult even with all of the high-tech surveillance equipment out there just like pretty much everything else take advantage of bad weather to travel by notice a trend here like clockwork traveling in bad weather during precipitation or with an overcast sky at a low altitude is paramount as we have stated many times bad weather is your friend when it comes to avoiding aerial surveillance now it's not foolproof of course and most fixed-wing ground attack aircraft can operate just fine in the rain but again all we're trying to do is reduce vulnerabilities not eliminate them entirely that concept also applies to reducing shine or glare from vehicle glass such as windows headlights tail lights and the windshield now to be honest there's not much that can be done about this in most cases the manuals tell you to cover as much glass as possible with mud or a poncho or even paint it with a non-reflective paint in reality very few people are going to do this but it is not unheard of for units to paint over windshields leaving just a small viewing port for the driver to see through though this is very very dangerous and not really practical for a convoy on the move speaking of being on the move one of the main defenses for military vehicles at least is the use of smoke to obscure the precise location of a vehicle now smoke is a big topic and we're going to talk a lot more about this when it comes to active defenses but it's worth mentioning now because smoke must be planned for remember how we said you have to make the decision of whether or not to engage before anything else well the use of smoke is super important to consider as well because if your convoy's plan is to engage the aircraft the use of smoke will impact your ability to engage the aircraft you don't want to pop smoke and blind your gunner who's trying to lay down some hate at an attacking aircraft you've got to choose what you're going to do and communicate that effectively to everyone ahead of time especially if you plan to use smoke smoke is normally used after you've already been detected like for instance if the aircraft has already made its attack run you can pop smoke and maybe confuse sensors just a little bit because as we know even just avoiding a missile hitting your vehicle from a few feet away that can mean the difference between life and death right so if we can confuse the aerial platform sensors by just a few feet that might make the difference smoke can also be a helpful decoy to distract from the true location of your assets before you're spotted too smoke draws the eye so it might be helpful to use smoke to direct the attention of observation aircraft which will surely check it out as with all other decoys the use of such decoys is not without risk if the enemy knows that a certain tactic you're doing is a decoy or a fake out they will be even more intent on discovering the real target since decoys are often located next to high value targets so when it comes to defense against convoys it also sounds quite simple maybe with a couple of extra steps to make sure camouflage efforts are effective well not so fast this is a great example of the trouble you can get into if you only read u.s military manuals you see all of this sounds well and good until it's you in the convoy then we have some contradictions for instance a common russian tactic is for helicopters to serve as a sort of aerial indirect fire platform the russians in particular are fond of this climbing attack in which they approach ground targets at high speed and low altitude then pull their nose up at a steep angle climbing up in altitude sharply at the top of their arc they fire their rockets at a steep angle at targets very far away slinging their rockets as far as they can while still being far away from the target we saw this kind of tactic being used in ukraine kind of a lot and many western observers think that this tactic is done in order to avoid man-pad threats which which makes sense or because pilots are scared to get close to their target but the mi24 actually has fire control systems on board to assist with this type of targeting so it's definitely more doctrinal than we think it's not just some you know russian bubba pilot just slinging rockets because he's too scared to get to the target now it's actually more doctrinal than we actually think but in any case it's hard to imagine unguided rockets being slung out of a launch tube in this manner being accurate at all and the observations in the field confirm this it's a very inaccurate way to fire rockets so what's the moral of the story and why does this matter to convoys well this specific tactic is just an illustration of how a convoy might not know that they are under an aerial attack they might think it's a ground attack or an ambush and the choice of what to do varies widely based on this distinction for instance the global war on terror has brought us classics like counter ambush tactics at this point it's pretty much common knowledge that if your convoy gets ambushed you do not stop you push through it you what quote get off the x or out of the kill box makes sense for ground convoys right we've gotten really good at this but what if that ambush turned out to be an aircraft attacking from so far away that you didn't see it in that case pushing through it and getting off the x might make it easier for an aircraft to target you especially if you were a hit in a wooded tree line and you push through it and to get into the open into an open clearing in that case pushing through it might make it easier for an aircraft to target you or make it more difficult for friendly air defenses to engage the aircraft in the heat of the moment when you're getting shot at or explosions are going off right outside your door when you only have seconds to react what are you going to do are you going to break out your vehicles and disperse them in a herringbone pattern or are you going to push through it just in case it's an ambush you don't know what's happening all you see is explosions up and down the convoy what if it is an ambush and you decide to disperse now you've got your convoys scattered on the x pretty much the worst thing that you could do what if a vehicle is disabled does that change your decision clearly these are hard decisions to make and we cannot possibly indicate what the right decision might be in a simple video here however we can say that generally speaking it is better to make a decision and stick with it rather than be indecisive in this situation even if you make the wrong decision this is preferable to not making a decision at all the whole concept of passive air defense is very simple but simple does not mean easy and all of these simple steps will require significant effort dedication and discipline over time to be as effective as possible and remember passive air defense is the first step hello again everyone and welcome back to the underground this is the Intel update for Friday the 28th of July 2023 and as usual it is being recorded on the day prior let's start out today by looking at some of the Strategic trends that I guess that's what I'm going to call it basically General topics uh that I'm keeping an eye on and that I think it would probably be a good idea to just kind of keep in the back of your mind as we move forward right up front I'll start with the intense uh UFO rhetoric that has been pervasive over the past a couple of years mostly but really it's kind of reared its ugly head anytime something is going bad for the US government UFOs suddenly uh popped back up in the news cycle as for me I think it's an interesting thought experiment I've even considered uh talking about UFOs or unexplained phenomena from a uh an Intel perspective and how we should treat these sources and and more along the lines of a Doctrine kind of thing but right now I'm really just not interested in it because I think the evidence is quite overwhelming that there's a lot of thing things that sure what we can't explain with regards to UFOs and stuff like that but I also see nothing but government chills talking about this kind of stuff right now like you know I think it's purely an information operation what we now call psyops I think it's a fairly cheesy effort and I think that it's a fairly low effort uh actually I think most people can kind of see through it or at least I hope most people most people it turns out are basically idiots but I hope that a lot of people can see through this and see oh okay there's going to be a hearing on UFOs oh it just so happens to be uh right around Hunter Biden's court date real convenient isn't it so when it comes to UFOs I despite my own you know kind of you know passive interest in that sort of thing uh right now from a professional side of things I'm basically treating this as one large information operation I'm not really interested in carrying it Forward too much even though the news cycle and Congress and the federal government and everyone is saturated with this UFO stuff I'm not interested in in kind of bringing it Forward more than just mentioning this is mostly because we've got other things to talk about like everything blowing up in the country again like I mentioned last time even though I hadn't been able to pinpoint some of these infrastructure uh incidents right uh they have continued and we've gotten quite a few more since the last briefing so I haven't been able to work back in time to kind of build out the map a little further but we'll work with what we've got and it's a pretty good amount so far and of course generally speaking the gaslighting that we have been living under for the past couple of years just continues unabated uh it's gotten really really bad and unfortunately the gaslighting is not really a long political line so much as ideological lines so uh I don't know about anyone else but from what I have seen of mainstream media sources of course you know their whole profession is gaslighting right but even among like supposedly independent journalists or conservative media sources which tend to give or which have historically given like a slightly different you know viewpoint on things uh it's like everybody's gaslighting these days Days A lot of people are doing it unintentionally like I mean good grief I've been personally wrong about a lot of things because I took in a piece of information which was a complete and utter fabrication uh and you know that's happened in the past there you know everybody's been gaslighted at some point uh but when it comes to how pervasive this stuff is man I mean you get gaslighted at your local grocery store I mean good grief it's pretty thick right now and basically every part of society is at least every part of society that I interact with uh gaslighting is most certainly a huge huge problem so with all of that in mind and of course taking everything with a giant handful of salt right let's move on to the individual regions and we'll first start off like always with the Northeast region first up in New Jersey I wanted to briefly cover the cargo ship fire that occurred a couple of weeks ago up in New Jersey this was the cargo ship Grande Costa De avorio which caught fire it was basically an entire ship dedicated to transporting Vehicles now I know what everyone's thinking and this this is part of the investigation but we officially don't know anything yet a lot of people were wondering okay maybe this is to do with electronic Vehicles lithium batteries are exceptionally flammable and they're very hard to put out and basically this entire ship a very large ship was basically a total loss and as of right now we're actually tracking another cargo vessel transporting electronic vehicles that is on fire I think it's uh right now off the Dutch Coast but I'll have to I'll have to figure that out that's kind of a developing thing I haven't been able to track down many details on that so far of course it's really hard to say we don't really know if the uh Grande Acosta devorio was carrying electric vehicles or just standard Vehicles it's really hard to say but in any case this killed two firefighters which is uh shows the severity of this fire and also how in emergency services you have a lot of crossover but there's not a whole lot of training so unfortunately the deaths of these two firefighters is probably more of a training thing because the local fire department who responded uh did actually admit that they had not undertaken shipborne fire training shipborne firefighting uh in a while so unfortunately you know emergency services are getting stretched you're stretched thin and they're being pushed beyond their limits for you know all the firings that were happened uh you know last year and uh unfortunately a lot of people getting out of the business so we're seeing a lot of new kinds of disasters occurring but also an entire basically a dumpster Fire Within the Emergency Services Community for many many reasons but we we can talk about that a little bit more in a dedicated video but while we're on the subject of fire uh let's mention the uh Construction crane fire that occurred in New York City uh which caused a fairly substantial uh event I certainly would not have wanted to be a witness to this uh basically one of those very large high-rise cranes caught fire which which led to a partial collapse no word on any injuries as far as I've seen but it looks like it was a fairly kinetic event so uh just something to keep in mind again is that we're starting to see you know one of these larger trends that we're tracking is a lot of problems within our infrastructure when it comes to our workplace accidents workplace accidents I don't know the specific data I'm sure someone does but I'm not entirely certain I would trust OSHA data at this point because they stopped tracking a lot of these kinds of incidents and people start reporting them as well but by and large what I mean is it seems like there's been an awful lot of industrial accidents lately that are legitimate accidents due to either incompetence low low maintenance uh Parts wearing out and not being swapped out enough uh stuff like that we've seen this quite a bit and it's easy to kind of point the finger and say ah it was a nefarious actor when in actuality it was mostly just incompetence and negligence I've talked about this quite a bit but for those of you who are kind of new this is one of the reasons why we want to talk about this infrastructure incidents and put a spotlight on some of these these things because some of these things are extremely nefarious and there is no reason why something should have exploded uh and there is absolutely no evidence to support any kind of mechanical failure and it looks purely deliberate wow but the media will cover it up and on the other hand some things look a little bit nefarious on the outside but when you look at them a little bit closer you see ah okay this was mostly just incompetence and the company or the government is trying to cover that up in general this is what we're seeing more often now again we suffer from a little bit of analytical bias because we're looking for these things now but at the same time we're fighting you know mainstream media which does not want to show our infrastructure crumbling we may not be able to pinpoint the reasons behind all this stuff but I can tell you even in just my local area the infrastructure is beyond crippled like it's a it's barely functional in most cases but also mostly a non-functional uh it's like living in a third world country in a lot of Rural America now unfortunately Switching gears quite significantly let's go over to Massachusetts where I would briefly wanted to mention the political targeting that uh is kind of a scandal that is coming out of the Boston mayor's office so uh mayor Michelle Wu is now in a lot of hot water for providing a Gestapo style basically like a hit list to police of all of the people that do not support her and allegedly on the list was a lot of her political Rivals as well so obviously uh details are kind of hard to come by right now on this whole incident but uh the mayor's office is pointing the finger at the police department saying that the police department requested a list of people to spy on and keep under surveillance and the police department on the other hand is saying no no this wasn't us this was all mayor's office idea this was like a miscommunication kind of thing uh but in any case just a whole list of private citizens who are political enemies uh to the Boston mayor are now under you know police surveillance right so uh this is no surprise this is actually despite how horrible this sounds this is absolutely a norm a few towns I've lived in this was pretty standard the mayor's office using the police department as their personal uh personal hit squad basically I've seen it person so this is not uncommon unfortunately uh you know we we now live in a world where this is a very common thing unfortunately but I do want to mention it because hey this is kind of the first time that mainstream media has kind of latched onto this and I thought it was kind of interesting considering the political ideology of the the Boston mayor usually these kinds of things when they're done by you know extreme leftists get get pushed under the rug but uh this one somehow made it through the cracks which I thought was kind of interesting but yeah again once again you know you have to remember we may uh complain a lot about tyrants in higher offices but more often than not you know the local local environment's a huge problem so I just wanted to make everyone aware of that moving down to the Southeast region we've got a whole lot of infrastructure problems starting off in Louisiana on July 17th uh the Dow Chemical Factory uh just outside of Baton Rouge uh caught fire and exploded now this is a very large facility uh just on the banks of the river there and they uh have not been helpful at determining what caused the explosion local media and other investigators have have complained quite a bit that Dao has not cooperated with Emergency Services they basically have handled the thing internally and of course of course of course uh Dao has stated that there's no contamination whatsoever and the air is perfectly fine despite the fact the majority of the plant caught fire and exploded this plant just in case you're wondering the section of the factory the production facility that caught fire and exploded was responsible for producing ethylene oxide which is known as a toxic industrial chemical so yeah a known carcinogen I guess is perfectly healthy according to Dow Chemical again not surprising but I thought I'd mention it moving on up to North Carolina we have a more high profile event because it involved Pfizer this was a medication production facility I guess is how I should say it that was struck by a tornado and the facility was a total loss now it's not immediately clear as to what was produced at this facility but we do do know that at least eight percent of all injectable medicine in the United States was allegedly being produced at this facility including other stuff it's really hard to say what was produced at this facility exactly of course the company's not going to tell us and you know the company's kind of sketchy history puts a lot of a lot of thoughts in our head right but I guess we'll just have to see how this impacts other medicines that uh that are being used around the country and wrapping things up with Virginia there was a liquid natural gas pipeline explosion just along uh Interstate 81 just outside of Strasbourg up there in Shenandoah County I think it's a pretty remote area the stretch of highway where the explosion occurred there's as far as memory serves me there's really nothing there uh it's there's no switching station as far as I know or or any kind of uh pumping station or or anything like that it looks just like a normal pipeline piece so I don't know if this was one of those um discoveries by Machinery kind of thing if somebody hit the pipeline I don't know it looked like based on the imagery and and uh the the journalistic photos that we've gotten I didn't look like there was anything in that area so again this is one of those things to kind of keep an eye on until we're until we know uh for sure that it was more of an accident we have to kind of treat this more of a as a uh potentially more nefarious so something to keep in mind moving over to the East Central midwestern region really we just have one kind of um I'm going to call this one an industrial accident because it does seem more accidental there was an explosion at a Winchester Factory uh just outside of St Louis which actually killed one worker uh apparently a truckload a semi truck full of shotgun primers exploded uh and devastated a good portion of that area it looks like the factory may be back online now because it's been a month or so since this but it's really hard to say because again we we very rarely get notification that hey this Factory is back online so I did want to briefly mention it for this region moving over to the West Central midwestern region just like clockwork the more remote area we move into uh the fewer details we get so uh there was an oil well explosion on the 18th of July a couple weeks ago up in Northwestern North Dakota now we have a whole lot of unknowns for this one uh the exact site of the explosion uh known don't even know which company was leasing the well but it looks like there was an explosion at some kind of Wellhead or pump or something like that nobody really knows and uh even though these events I mean they're decently common I guess uh but this one did cause a minor evacuation in the local area because it was along a road so I did want to mention that that you know hey this stuff kind of happens all the time but even though it happens all the time we still need to keep keep these events uh in the back of our minds moving down to the southwestern region boy how do I talk about this I don't think I figured it out yet I've said multiple times I've been trying to figure out a way to talk about the immigration crisis down on the southern border but uh for right now I just haven't been able to figure out how to talk about this kind of thing because it's a very well for one it's very political but it's also very surprising uh for me just my own personal background I grew up in the rural South that's where I grew up and spent most of my childhood so for me agricultural workers picking tobacco uh because I lived in a very heavily dominated uh tobacco area that was a norm and unfortunately there's a lot of stuff that you kind of learn growing up and it doesn't become strange to you um so when you see immigrants from you know Mexico uh being sent all around the United States to these places where they're not exactly used to people fresh off the boat so to speak it kind of is it's kind of interesting to see how people react to that sort of thing because for me it's just a norm uh for me it's it's um not a pleasant memory I have uh I will say that but it's something that's fairly common uh people don't necessarily understand what you know like I lived I think a quarter mile from a migrant Camp a very large migrant Camp had about 500 uh illegals working at it uh living there that whole facility it was really just an old farmhouse that somebody had converted to to put about 50 people per room and uh yeah it's pretty rough uh so there's a lot of cultural things that come out and it's very hard to talk about it unless you've experienced it now everybody down there in this area I know you guys know what I'm talking about but for a lot of people like say in New York City who are just you know aghast at seeing uh some of the things they're seeing at a lot of these uh I guess I guess they're calling them refugee camps or Refugee uh encampments places where they're sending all these migrants all over the United States so yeah as bad as it sounds to kind of say and how and and how carefully I'm trying to talk around this sort of thing uh we saw the same exact thing with Afghanistan right we saw the whole Afghanistan crisis we put a lot of you know Afghans on planes and brought them here to the United States and set them up shop and in a tent city uh at Fort Bliss in El Paso and we wonder why we have some of the problems that we have you know when you've got an Afghan guy who lied about being a senior Taliban commander and he gets on the plane and he's now in El Paso what do you do you know likewise with a guy who says oh you know these are all my my kids you know and they get on the plane and they end up in El Paso and you find out that some you know 60 year old guy has a six-year-old wife you know what do you do with that sort of thing it's not exactly an easy problem set to work through and I think the majority of America that is not familiar with a lot of these problems uh are now finding out uh what happens when you've got this kind of thing happening so I'll just kind of live it leave it at that I'm sorry that I'm having to tip to around it uh so much I just really don't want to paint this incorrectly I want to be as accurate as possible when describing the immigration crisis uh and it is a crisis this is a very serious problem and there's almost nothing that can be done about it unfortunately at least by the average citizen it does point we're seeing a lot of problems with this and I don't really know how to uh to get at the issue because again it's one of those things where we're barely allowed to even talk about it in the first place and even then we've got a tip to around it just so that we don't get on some list I get taken out um so yeah I think we'll just leave it there and move on to the West uh so the only thing I have for the West is in California an interesting rather interesting domestic spying case uh and this you can read more about it if you want you can research it because it's kind of gotten a little bit more mainstream media coverage because of how interesting this is but The Story Goes that a man in California lost his homeowners insurance policy uh reportedly again all of this is reportedly allegedly so take it with a giant grain of salt right uh because he had clutter in his yard and when he contacted the insurance company to figure out why his policy why he got a letter saying his policy had been uh just canceled outright with no uh attempt to mitigate stuff or whatever they just said hey your your policy is canceled because you've got clutter in your yard which is a risk for us when he tried to contact the insurance company for clarification they said oh yeah yeah we sent a drone over your house and uh we got some drone imagery of the clutter in your yard so he of course like I think most people would uh freaked out quite a bit and started digging a little bit further escalated the issue ended up talking to a lot more senior people at the company which then started backtracking quite a bit uh the company then started uh retracting these claims saying oh no no we didn't use a drone we used uh commercial satellite imagery in any case uh it looks really really sketchy and personally based on the details that look you know what's most likely I think they probably did send a drone over his his property some kind of quadcopter or something so yeah this is kind of an interesting case whether it's true or not is Up For Debate I will admit that uh but it's not necessarily something that's out of the realm of possibility uh we have seen this quite a lot insurance policies have been been canceled so often in this country for various different reasons you know remember we cannot forget what happened quite literally like last year you know people getting their bank accounts shut off uh because they had the audacity to donate five dollars to a charity you know but it was the wrong charity the unapproved government charity right so they lost their money when you've got you know politicians in the UK being locked out of all financial institutions that's a problem that's quite pervasive now you know uh so getting locked out of finances getting your insurance policies canceled uh getting memberships canceled subscriptions canceled uh this is a very very common thing uh I don't know if I would call it a Norm just yet uh but it's definitely a norm if you have a certain political ideology and by that I mean you oppose literally anything that world Elise wants you to to go along with right this kind of goes back to the whole gaslighting thing I mentioned like oh we're not spying on you uh that's around right-wing conspiracy theorists we're not spying on you to oh yeah we're spying on you and it's a good thing uh that's that's how it works right so yeah it's fairly depressing to think about uh and I really don't like to think about it because there's really not much you can do about it uh you really have to live a very very difficult lifestyle trust me on this uh you have to live a very very difficult and very hard lifestyle uh just to get the tiniest bit of privacy anymore so yeah uh things are um I would say very challenging uh very challenging in the world today I'm going to go ahead and skip over the international events because uh I am still trying to figure out what the game is uh specifically with a lot of things going on for instance the the unrest in Israel I don't like to cover uh Israeli incidents because anything to do with Israel is a lightning rod topic like I've mentioned in the past and there's just no winning even though it's patently obvious as to what's going on uh it just doesn't do very well to kind of get knee deep in these topics there's just no winning right for now I just kind of wanted to clear the plate on the US and I get a lot of these domestic incidents uh documented if nothing more than for posterity's sake I think that ends up being the goal of most of these briefings is just to serve as a record of saying hey yeah we knew at the time uh what was going on and uh it happened anyway so that happens a lot a lot of times I think a lot of us are kind of in the mode of uh recording things simply for posterity's sake at this point I'm definitely in that in that mode kind of getting a lot of educational stuff pushed out but yeah we'll we'll make it or we'll do the best we can either way and I guess that's pretty much the only option we have um these days I don't think we have any hope whatsoever for large victories but I think that we still have quite a few small victories that we can go for and if the small victory is simply surviving another day in this crazy world I think that's probably a good victory to go for so Hello again everyone and welcome back to the underground. This is the intel update for August 3rd through the 9th, 2025. It has been extremely busy around the world and at home this week, so let's go ahead and get right to it. Most of the events that have taken place around the United States this week have pertained to things like mass shootings, IEDs, utter pandemonium, you get the idea. Most of which are isolated incidents. However, these could also be an indication of growing sentiment here in the homeland, which we'll touch on in just a moment. Our friends to the north are not doing so well either as the wildfires in Canada continue to spread. But also social considerations start factoring in as Canada begins uh what many are calling climate lockdowns in certain areas such as Nova Scotia. Overseas things are indeed moving once again in Ukraine and in the Middle East. In Ukraine, peace talks are continuing and discussions between the United States, Russia, and Ukraine continue to be more frank in nature as all sides are seeking to try to just get down to brass tax and figure out what's what it's going to take to end this conflict. Ukraine is obviously not going to budge on any of their uh demands from their side. However, they're not really that much of a factor as much as it may be unfortunate for them to hear. What Ukraine thinks is not really a factor in this conflict. to the most of the negotiation is being undertaken between the United States and Russia as as one might expect. Russia wants eastern Ukraine. The United States says there may be some territorial exchange probably Donetsk and Luhansk if not more. Again, none of this is particularly new. This has always kind of been on the table ever since Russia was able to take Donetsk and Luhansk and hold both of those regions fairly effectively throughout the duration of the war. So again, not surprising in the slightest, but uh now that this is starting to get a little bit closer to the to the finish line here, things may uh start clicking into place. Who knows? We've gotten much closer before and uh things have veered away sharply right at the end. So this whole situation is is very dynamic and and absolutely nothing is certain. Similar situation in the Middle East. Uh something that is not unsurprising in the slightest is the announcement that Israel is going to annex Gaza and officially bring uh Gaza into uh Israel's formal territory. Once again, like a broken record, this is not new by any means. Israeli media has been saying this once every couple of weeks for the past year or so. And most Western media is now kind of forming the general consensus that Israel is probably moving into the stages to actually formally try to take Gaza more militarily. You know, again, easier said than done, right? Israel has quote unquote invaded Gaza at least a dozen times now. Somehow or another. We always hear about a new invasion in the next every couple of months, right? So, it's not as simple as that. It's not like this is going to be a particularly easy military victory, but it will definitely be a lot easier now to just roll in and and start bulldozing the rubble now that basically everything in Gaza has been bombed. What this means for the average American taxpayer is that once this conflict is settled one way or the other, if Israel is able to achieve their strategic goals, which again is not a foregone conclusion, but let's just say they do it. Let's just say they're able to take Gaza and into their uh terrain in the way that they want to do it. What will that mean? Well, that will mean that a front uh in a war is is no longer a factor. Right? So, if you're a nation state, this going going back to all forms of warfare doctrine. If you're a nation state and you're fighting on multiple fronts, when one front collapses or is no longer a factor or you reach a sort of peace agreement with a nation, either through diplomatic means or by killing all of them, when that front is no longer a fighting front, that means you can shift resources to other fronts. So, all of that is to say, when Gaza is fully militarily conquered, we'll probably see a very strong shift of resources to one of Israel's other fronts. We're talking West Bank, we're talking Syria, maybe Iran again, I don't know. Uh either way, the United States will be involved in some form or fashion. So this is something to keep an eye on uh unfortunately. So that's it for the global overview. Let's go ahead and shift to the United States and talk about the uh kinetic events that have taken place this week. This is again the general overview of what I have uh been aware of and kind of been investigating on my own. This is by no means all of the things that have occurred this week. Uh this is just the stuff that I've been able to put on the map and do a little bit of investigation on my own. Some of the more high-profile things. And once again, it has been a very very kinetic week, right? The proverbial frog in the pot appears to be simmering at this point. So again, this is fairly typical for the summertime in the United States when uh general crime increases, mass shootings tend to increase uh during the summer months as well. A lot of these general crimes tend to kind of pop up uh when when weather is pretty good. It's not really a causation thing. It's more of a correlation thing, but this is definitely a correlation that kind of pops up every year. But this time this week, we've had multiple mass shootings, multiple uh IEDs and arson attacks uh take place all around the United States. So again, we'll touch on some of these as I get to them through the regions, but just as a brief overview, we of course have the IED factory that was discovered in Long Beach. This was revealed to us through the DOJ where classic case, right? Uh the FBI befriends somebody online who wants to be a bomb maker. They provide all the resources to do so and eventually take him down, right? Fairly standard MMO from the FBI. Uh, and really the only source of this information is of course the DOJ. So not a whole lot of information on this. I'm calling this an IED factory incident because this was what the guy was doing and that's the doctrinal term to describe a structure in which explosives are being made. Right? So ammunition and weapons production facilities sometimes if they're more improvised we shorten that to IED factory uh in the nomenclature. So it sounds really scary, right? IED factory. It sounds bigger than it is in a lot of cases, but this is a nomenclature, even if it turns out to be some goober making some very poorly constructed IED uh in their back room, which has occurred a couple of times this week. Anyway, moving on to a more deliberate attack was the arson attack in St. Louis, specifically the township of Clayton. this incident. I'm waiting on more information for this because obviously this is very politically hot button topic and I don't know if there's going to be some manipulation going on with the information that we have, but allegedly an IDF soldier uh was targeted in an arson attack by someone setting fire to the vehicles on the street outside his house and leaving anti-Israel or anti-IDF uh graffiti. I've not seen an uncensored version of the graffiti, so I'm not entirely certain what what was said. I've not been able to confirm a whole lot of the details myself on this or or even really dig into this a whole lot. So hopefully next week we'll have something that I can work with, but right now it's just information operations all around unfortunately on that one. Moving over to Tennessee again, an IED factory in Old Fort was discovered. We'll talk about it here in a minute, but uh this was definitely a case of some goober uh trying to build what he thought were IEDs in his in his back room. And yeah, you'll see the photos here in a minute and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. But more kinetically this week, we of course have the mass shooting at Fort Stewart in Georgia and also the mass shooting in Atlanta, which took place last night. I haven't been able to uh dig into too many details on that one, but again, two instances which are very highly polarizing. The shooting at the army base uh appears to be more of a workplace dispute. I can't that's just speculation at the moment. I can't confirm any of this, but it it appears to be a workplace dispute. We'll know soon enough because uh of the five people who were shot at Fort Stewart, all five of them are expected to survive and only two of them had minor injuries. So uh we'll definitely know how that whole situation went down if the army is willing to uh release a lot of those details. The shooting in Atlanta is going to be much harder to get information on as the shooting took place at the CDC headquarters. So that's it for the general overview. Let's go ahead and shift to Canada for just a moment. So, as many of you know, Canada is dealing with a very severe wildfire uh crisis situation, mostly in central Canada, but also dotted throughout the country and really the continent as well. All of these red dots uh that you can see here on the slide depict current detections of wildfires or some kind of heat signature. So, this is something you can see on my online tracking maps. You can turn this layer on or off. Uh it's it's off by default, but if you go into the layers, you can turn on the fire data, and there's several different satellite layers you can choose from. They're not always perfect. Uh that's why multiple layers is is helpful. But you can clearly see there's a very large hot spots detected in central Canada. I wanted to mention this because Canada has decided to start locking down some areas due to climate reasons, right? So the general situation that's going around or the general sentiment being expressed by many Canadians is that the climate lockdowns have begun. And here's what I mean by that. So Canada, specifically Nova Scotia, has decided to ban people from the woods. So most national parks, open spaces, things like that are closed right now to the public. And also, they're trying to crack down on private property as well to try to tell people that they can't be on their own land. Uh because somehow just people being in the wilderness, just standing in the woods of it's it's going to cause a wildfire, right? There hasn't really been a push to identify arsonists or uh try to go after people who may be setting these fires or anything like that. Uh they're just trying to lock down and prevent people from going out in the woods again. So they've pulled out all of the policies from the CO era and they've they've returned to form quite truly in Nova Scotia at least. Now I wanted to mention this because this sounds bad, right? This sounds like well if people are in the woods and there's fires going on, you know, maybe it would be a good idea to keep people out of the woods. Maybe it would be a good idea to keep people out of harm's way or prevent, you know, the hot exhaust from a car setting off some brush or something like that. So, if you don't know where Nova Scotia is, you might be inclined to think, well, this I can see the logic here of of kind of closing these places off, right? Because in the United States, we do the same thing. If there's a big wildfire, right, we want people to stay out of the place where the wildfire is. That's a generally, you know, good idea to do. Well, here's the problem. Here's where Nova Scotia is located. This, ladies and gentlemen, is where Canada has decided to lock down people and prevent them from going into public parks. Nowhere near any of the wildfires that are currently burning. So, you see why this might be a slight problem or why many people might say that this is politically motivated and not actually a wildfire thing. So, yeah, I'll just leave with that and let you guys form your own conclusions because it certainly seems like uh this is really just kind of testing the waters for more national level policies. uh that may come later on. Now, moving down south to the United States in the southeast region. Like I mentioned, we have one IED factory discovered in a uh double wide down there in Old Fort, Tennessee. Now again, I know people are going to hear the term IED factory and think this is some kind of largecale terroristic kind of activity, but if you look at the IEDs that they discovered uh in this guy's trailer just in the middle of nowhere, Tennessee, you can rapidly come to the conclusion that this was most certainly a case of some goober who hates the government, who probably threatened his local politicians, threatened the local police department, and they rolled up there and found some very, very crudely, as in so crude they probably would not even work IEDs that this guy had created. For those people who are very familiar with this region of the United States, this arrest uh is not even remotely surprising in the slightest. So again, this is definitely more of some goober uh causing problems down there in the local area and less of a case of an al-Qaeda splinter cell, right? this is just some idiot in the woods with a lot of explosives, which is again very common for that area, but some you don't want to downplay or like uh you know factor out of the equation because these people can be pretty dangerous if they get enough smarts about them somehow. But generally speaking, we hear IEDs discovered 14 explosive devices discovered at a compound in the woods. You know, we can phrase this in such a way to make it sound a lot more organized than it really is, and it's just some idiot in the woods. So, all in all, it's important to get the background context of this sort of thing because that's a little bit more helpful for assessing risk. If I heard the news story like the news was trying to make it sound like there's some kind of al-Qaeda training camp down here in Tennessee and they found over a dozen explosive devices, well, that's a lot different than what actually happened, right? So context is important for mitigating a lot of risk, especially when it comes to, you know, a lot of the same old sources keep claiming that there's this mass like 9/11 right around the corner and they latch on to this stuff and away we go, right? So not to say that it's not important. You need to be aware of it. You need to be aware of people like this and how these sorts of cases are taking place all around the country and they get no coverage. But again, there is also very much the incentive to manipulate these kinds of stories to make it seem like they're uh you know, more organized than they are. So, just something to be aware of. Now, also in the Southeast region, I'll briefly cover what's going on in DC this week, and of course, it's fairly busy as usual. Something that I have not seen any coverage on uh with from any media source is the SNAP program overhaul. For many of you who have not heard of this, the federal government is overhauling the SNAP system right now and there are changes being made to which products are available for purchase with uh EBT cards. So, the bottom line is that there's been a lot of unrest at some grocery store chains and mostly convenience stores like 7-Eleven and things like that where people get up to the counter, they realize their EBT card won't pay for whatever product that they're trying to buy and they go ballistic, right? Something to be aware of. I don't know how widespread this problem is, but the federal government a few months ago and a few states as well with state level resources. Uh the various agencies that handle various welfare programs in many different areas are starting to overhaul and tweak these things and reduce the number of products. Many of you have probably seen the efforts by RFK Jr. to kind of like publicly remove things like sodas and uh sugary snacks and things like that from the SNAP program. Uh I don't know if they've reached a consensus on that part yet. However, a few months ago, the program was quietly altered and uh ever so often things kind of get delisted and a few days ago, a lot of people realized, wait a minute, half their cartload of groceries is no longer covered by the program. So, just something to keep in mind if you're trying to have a peaceful shopping experience. In some places, you might have a bit of a brawl on the checkout line, but I just wanted to mention it because uh I haven't seen anybody else uh talk about it yet. And this is probably going to get worse over time as the program to kind of shrink the SNAP program continues. So, another thing to be aware of is the federalization of Washington DC. There's been a lot of talk about this over the past couple of weeks or so. I don't really know how this is going to work out in practice, but uh anytime the National Guard kind of deploys to DC, I uh perk my ears up for obvious reasons. I don't know how serious they are about that, but you know how things are going in Washington. the the official government policy changes by the hour uh on in a lot of cases. So, I don't really know what to make of it. They may put fences back up. Uh I don't know how serious they are about federalizing DC, but there's definitely this initiative to try to decrease the crime in the National Region, especially the National uh the National Mall. I don't know how it's going to go, but you may see some changes in DC over the next few weeks as they try to figure something out. I don't know. Moving down to Georgia, there was, of course, a mass shooting at the CDC headquarters in Atlanta. This was originally reported as a shooting at Emory University. But after a while, it became clear that the person was on the campus shooting at the CDC headquarters. They basically just arrived at the scene, pulled out a weapon, and started shooting at the CDC building uh randomly seemingly. This is a developing story, so I don't have a whole lot of details on it yet. So far, one fatality was reported. one of the police officers who was the one of the first responders to the shooting was shot by the shooter and uh the situation kind of rapidly deteriorated from there. As far as the shooter themselves, I have no information on this. It's been almost a full day after the shooting so far and we don't have a name. We don't have uh any kind of details on the shooter except for one thing. I find it very very odd that we don't know the shooter's name. We don't know what their deal was. We don't know their history or anything about them. Yet, the mainstream media is still reporting at the moment that they shot up the CDC building because they were vaccine injured and they had grievances with the CDC uh with regards to vaccine production. So, I find that very convenient and I am just naturally skeptical about stuff like that, especially when it comes out and we don't even know the shooter's name, but yet we know why they did the crime. Isn't that very odd? Normally, it's the other way around. and we know the shooter's identity, but we don't know why. Like the the guy who shot President Trump and and Butler, right? We know who committed that crime, but we don't know why. So, I find that to be very interesting that that that's the story that's going around. Of course, this will definitely be something that we investigate. It could very well be true. There are a lot of people with a lot of grievances and a lot of people at the end of the rope on that front. Could be true, but again, I'm trying to kind of pump the brakes on any kind of information manipulation on that. So, I'm just going to have to say we'll see. And speaking of the truth not really being known, I did want to briefly mention the initial scandal that I spent so much time writing about just for the policy to be rescended immediately after I wrote my report. This of course is the uh discovery of an old policy by uh the Reuters journalistic agency in which they discovered that the Department of Homeland Security had quietly uh put in allegiance to Israel as a condition for getting federal FEMA aid. Not necessarily aid for victims of disasters, but for the terms and conditions for getting federal grants for equipment mostly. That's mostly what it applied to. Now, I know I've written a lot about this in the wire, so I don't want to beat a dead horse here, but the general gist of what occurred is that back on April 18th, the DHS updated their terms and conditions for what you've got to do essentially to get federal aid for your agency, department, whatever, uh, when it comes to disaster relief aid for things like FEMA. So, if your fire department wants to buy a new Stokes litter and they don't have the funding to do so, well, FEMA's got you covered. There are probably there are a lot of federal grants that will allow local departments to buy stuff, but you've got to follow the rules, right? You've got to make sure that your department is following all the guidelines by the feds. And back on April 18th, the federal government updated their terms and conditions for getting this type of uh grant money, which they do every year. They update these things several times a year actually because they frequently catch typos and things like that and problems arise. So, they they update these things quite often. And on April 18th, they quietly added in a paragraph that states that if you boycott an Israeli company, then you're not getting federal aid. And that of course became rapidly inflammatory because of how this is technically the textbook definition of treason, right? I mean, nobody wants to say it, but that's what it is. If you're acquiring allegiance to a nation state, if you're requiring Americans to purchase something from a foreign nation before you're going to help them, that's is that not treason? I mean, anyway, but following what happened, uh, nobody really noticed this because nobody really cares about terms and conditions by federal governments. So, nobody cared about this, uh, even though it appeared on April 18th until August 4th when Reuters noticed it. Uh, I don't know how or why they came to notice it. I mean, it was there. it was on the portal the whole time. I mean, nobody really noticed it, but this is how the federal government works a lot of times. They'll put a government document online for the public to see, but because it's nested so deeply in, you know, government infrastructure, nobody notices it for a while. So they finally noticed it on August 4th. Everybody freaks out and uh the government, which is the more interesting part, more interesting than the policy itself because the policy itself, let's let's face it, this this kind of mentality has kind of solidified in most law at this point. What's interesting to me though is that the DHS went in there and edited the file. They didn't change the version. So the the file name that was actually posted online was version three. You would think that they would create version four. That's not what they did. They edited version three to make it look like this paragraph was never in the text at all. They deleted the initial version of this, so you can't find it at all. Uh what it originally said, which to me sounds like a violation of the Federal Records Act, but what do I know? But anyway, uh the paragraph is no longer there, so everything's good and and copathetic, right? Well, no, not really. Just because a federal agency stops committing a crime does not mean that that crime did not occur. So, what has been the result from all of this? Well, really the White House in particular and the entire executive branch and well really all branches of government have just tried to pretend like this never happened, right? So they're just saying they're taking the position of well we changed it. So what? You know what's the problem? Well, because people want accountability. They want to know from April 18th when this policy was in place to August 4th when you secretly rescended it and tried to pretend like it never existed, how many departments were denied federal aid based on this policy? Right? We want to know that this is something that's very important. It's hurricane season. It's wildfire season. People like me need to know, did my local fire department bend the knee enough to a foreign nation state so that they could get some FEMA aid that might help me if I need to get rescued one day. We we kind of need to know these sorts of things and everyone's kind of ignored this. Somewhat interestingly, what I you know what I thought they were personally going to do? What I thought the White House was going to do is blame it on an intern and then just say it was some crazy uh person who unilaterally made a decision, then they fire uh somebody and then, you know, kind of cover it up from there. That's not what they did. DHS and FEMA and the White House have not taken the position that this was a rogue actor. So, this was not a malign actor. This was the policy. I thought they were going to do it. I thought they were going to say I was just some malign actor in government, but they didn't. uh they have basically just said, "We've changed the policy, so next question." Which to me means that the risk is still the same. So either way, trust is very hard to recover once it's lost. And like it or not, it doesn't matter if it's fair or not, the next time there is a disaster, Americans are going to wonder if a paragraph mandating support for a foreign nation is going to mysteriously reappear 5 minutes before a hurricane hits. If they secretly added it and they secretly removed it with a couple of clicks of a mouse button, then how do we know they're not going to do that right before a disaster, right? Anyway, that's something to consider. I know that it's a topic that's that not a lot of big voices are going to talk about because it's dangerous. It's dangerous to talk about this sort of thing nowadays. It's physically dangerous. It's financially dangerous. Part of me gets it because I understand people have to play the game in all aspects of society in some ways. But look, man, you know, at a certain point, you've really got to start looking at this stuff because it's starting to impact your safety and well-being, right? Regardless of who's heading up these agencies or who's in the White House, this is something that we've got to hold people accountable for. So, I'll just kind of leave that uh there. The policy has changed allegedly. All the DEI stuff is still there, though, which is interesting. But, that's a completely separate fight than the initial uh complaint with this document. So, I guess we're just going to have to see if or when this stuff uh gets changed. All I know is that I'm just trying to focus on basic risk assessment and a government document which uh is as concerning as this one certainly needs to be considered for people who are trying to prepare for disasters, right? Nobody's going to want to talk about it, but we've got to and uh we can see how things go from here. So, moving out west, I did want to mention this because I think this is going to be another case of information manipulation, and this is the developments in the case with regards to the M18 service pistol regarding the case of the airman who was shot at FE Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming a couple of weeks ago or last week. The Air Force has shifted that investigation to being an involuntary manslaughter uh investigation. So one airman has been arrested for uh making false statements uh obstruction of justice things like that. So of course this case has taken another turn. It is not as simple as we thought it was initially which is what the air force thought it was is the M18 went off shot the service member in the chest killed him and that was that was what was uh theorized and triggered the investigation. Right? We have to trigger investigation so that we can get to the truth. Right? And the development in this investigation is that the Air Force seems to think that at least one person who was there or involved in this case made false official statements. So that is a piece of information that you have to process and make your own risk assessments. Now the reason I wanted to mention this is one because this is an interesting development that people should be aware of but also because my irritation with the online influencer community grows daily. And what I mean by that is I think that it is important to get ahead of this when it comes to risk assessment. Remember like I just said, I'm trying to approach well life in general as an exercise in risk assessment, right? Trying to figure out how to carefully mitigate risk, take chances when possible, but also be as safe as possible while taking those risks in an increasingly dangerous world. So that's the frame of mind I'm coming at this from. I personally have nothing against Sauer. there is a P226 sitting on my desk right now as I'm recording this. I don't have a personal vendetta against them whatsoever. But what I do find concerning is what's getting ready to happen if it's not already happening on some parts of uh social media for instance. So two things are going to happen. One, a lot of people are going to make it seem like people were foolish for ever doubting SIG, right? And secondly, they're going to want apologies for switching over to other firearms, banning the P320, the M17, and M18 at uh gun ranges, things like that. So essentially, a lot of influencers in the gun space are going to be like, "Shame on you. You should never have doubted Sig. This was the case. This was like a murder investigation. Uh it wasn't a case of uh Sig finally killing somebody." So on and so forth. That's what the the gaslighting attempts are going to look like. And understanding this is going to be crucial for risk assessment because unfortunately a lot of people hinge their world view on uh what an influencer says and does. And I don't like it. The political left does it, the political right does it, but they pretend that they don't. And unfortunately, I I think, you know, the fat lady has not sung on this. Uh mostly because not one single person who was gloating about Sig, you know, potentially being redeemed by this uh and the developments in this case. Not a single one of those people knew at the time that this might have been murder or some other kind of foul play situation. We must remember what happened at the time. We have to remember what decisions were made, right? The army and the air force stopped using the pistol out of an abundance of caution. So my question is exactly what were we supposed to do, right? Was that not a good enough reason to mitigate risk? If the army comes out and says, "Hey, this pistol is dangerous enough for us to stop using it forcewide and we're going to investigate this." Is that not a good enough reason to say there might be a problem here and to just figure this stuff out? If the army said it was too risky to use, exactly what is the consumer market supposed to think, right? And unfortunately, I think a lot of people who are probably being paid by Sig, I think that a lot of people are going to make it seem like that decision to stop using this pistol would have been foolish. Like, you should never have doubted Sig. This is shame on you kind of thing. And I think that is gaslighting of the highest order, especially considering that this scandal has been years in the making. People have been shot by this pistol. Sig is definitely not out of the woods yet, and they're definitely not do apology either. The investigation is still ongoing. The pistol could have still gone off in a holster. The the service member could have just lied about who did it, right? There are so many speculative angles to this story. There's not a whole lot that we can learn. So, what can we learn from this? Well, like I said, the P320 situation itself, not so much. Nobody can definitively say what's wrong. And a much more technical analysis is definitely needed before we uh make a final judgment call on that. But what about the reaction to it? Right? In typical fashion, I'm sure it probably annoys many of you, but generally when a scandal occurs, I'm not so much interested by the scandal, but by the reaction to it and the manipulation and the gaslighting that occurs. And in that in this case, that is what I'm most interested in. So when it comes to risk assessment for me, I would very strongly recommend to number one, never let anyone make you feel foolish in hindsight for being a little bit more safe or riskaverse during a situation. And I see that happening all the time. And and that's just that's not the appropriate way to assess risk. But also, and this kind of affects that risk assessment, too, is that when big money is involved, trust is easier to lose and harder to earn. Could it possibly be that people in SIG's ecosphere or or the or any gun company's ecosphere, it's not just SIG, this applies to all very large corporations, people who are in the sphere of these companies, could it possibly be that company, in this case SIG, may seek to use these soft measures, these uh more indirect means of controlling information to protect their 500 plus million dollar contract. I don't know. It just seems like the gun industry culture a lot of times covers up a lot of the very corporate and dirty nature of this. And I think Sig's behavior uh during this entire uh situation has very much enlightened a lot of people uh that just because they're a gun company does not mean that they are pro- second amendment. Just because a gun company exists does not mean that they're acting in the best interest of the American people. Right? So, you know, gun companies are not immune from all of the criticism that a lot of other big Fortune 500 companies get. And we tend to forget that with SIG. People are uh very much brand loyal and there's a lot of insanity uh going around these days. And uh it's something to keep in mind if you're trying to just be safe. What I certainly would not want to have happen is this story break. And a lot of influencers get out there and say, "Look, Sig is vindicated." They're not vindicated, but they're going to say, "Oh, Sig is vindicated. This was a really a murder case." Or something like that. And Sig is, of course, going to lean into this and say, "See, look, you never should have doubted us. Come back. Start carrying your P320 again." And not a single fix has been implemented. The only thing that has changed is now the Air Force is investigating somebody for making false statements. That's it. For me, that's not nearly enough information for me to assume the risk of saying, "Well, the P320 is all fine now." you know, there's got to be more investigation on this. So, all you all we know is that a service member lied about the incident. That's all we know. We don't know uh what actually happened. And I think that a lot of people are going to lean into this. And I would really really hate for somebody to get injured or killed out there simply because the online influencer culture is probably going to spin up about this. So, please be careful of how you conduct your own risk assessment, your own risk analysis, and definitely uh keep that in mind when it comes to people who might be financially motivated to get you to think one way or the other. I I've only got the three uh screenshots here, but there were dozens of messages I I uh wasn't able to sift through this week. It's it's it's becoming a very large network. It's working out very very well and I'm glad to see uh this providing a lot of useful services for people who are trying to get information in an off-grid way. You know, a lot of the times it's not necessarily about the the novelty of radio. It's about trying to, you know, war game these kinds of things and start getting familiar with a lot of systems and radio technology that can be used to exchange information in a more resilient and censorship resistant way. radio, especially HF radio, is not perfect. It is very hard to use in a lot of cases. It's definitely not for beginners, but out of all of my research that I have done uh over the past uh decade, I guess, this is really one of the only solutions that we have. And we're not really using these tools the way they were intended to be used, uh but we're using them in ways that they can be used. Right? I know I haven't gone into depth on the Ghost Net stuff in a while. I'm going to circle back around to comms in a bit. I'm still writing some stuff on that. hello again everyone and welcome back to the underground this is the Intel update for March 16th through the 22nd 2025 so let's get right to it starting off in the Southeast region just touching on things that have happened in Washington DC this week as we all know the JFK files were released tens of thousands of pages of documents have uh been posted online in several batches so anyone interested can definitely go check them out uh if if you wish so far there hasn't really been any one single Smoking Gun document that says who did it sort of thing which I don't think anyone was really expecting but most of the documents so far the ones that I've I've looked through myself with my own eyes seem to really just kind of confirm what we already sort of know now a lot of people who have not been following the JFK's sort of uh investigation and not necessarily the the details of what is essentially just a very famous murder investigation but more along the lines of the international Espionage that go that went along with this investigation a lot of people are going to be very surprised when they learn certain details of this investigation and the international connections and things like that but uh for the most part anything controversial has largely been ignored but this may change as time goes on and people start start digging down into these documents one thing to remember though that when it comes to a very large uh conspiracy that goes back decades right of many spanning many many presidencies we have to remember that there may be a reason as to why these documents are have been released during this period in time so it could be a more deliberate timing uh to to coincide with maybe a softer Landing uh so to speak with regards to the revelations that some of these documents may bring to the table so same story with the Epstein documents uh there haven't really been any developments on that with the exception of the doj announcing that they are mobilizing over 1,000 FBI agents to comb through the Epstein documents to see what they can release or something to that effect I'm not really entirely sure once again these documents were supposed to be on the Attorney General's desk a couple of weeks ago now so I'm not really sure why they need to be gone through again except for you know reasons that we probably already can guess especially considering the Personnel changes at the FBI of course we know that the leadership of the FBI has changed but all the field agents are still the same agents that have been employed by the FBI for decades now right so just because you Chang the leadership doesn't necessarily mean that you change the people in the agency so of course expectation management is key here and and and once again I don't think anyone's holding their breath on this other developments in Washington are the Department of Education has been dismantled or ordered to be dismantled by an executive order or executive action it's hard to tell these days what's the difference between an executive action and an executive order these days because some of these uh executive actions are not being listed or numbered like executive orders traditionally are however in this case if you read through the document yourself you can see that it it's mostly meant to make the Department of Education toothless uh for the moment there's a lot of money involved in the doe so that's got to be kind of ironed out you can't just write one document that says be gone you know you have to sort of account for things and and eliminating a cabinet position is going to take a a lot of time but uh this is one of those things that we can see the order being issued but we'll have to see how many months down the line uh is the Department of Education still a thing at the federal level so again something to keep your eye on this week's theme is generally been the Judiciary causing a little bit of uh consternation amongst really all of government in the form of random judges throughout Washington DC just declaring things so once again just as a reminder the transgender ban of uh service members in the military it doesn't explicitly say the word transgender in the in the executive order however the the content of it really just kind of is a transgender ban and also the uh deportation flights of Venezuelans to El Salvador was halted uh they were halted by two separate judges we know how the story goes no need to dwell on it too much but I guess the Department of Defense is is definitely having to answer some questions now as to why their operational actions and are being second guessed by a judge I don't know how this plays into National Defense I kind of touched on it but I I don't think very many other people have this concern uh so that's why I touched on it but anytime a judge can tell a military unit what to do as opposed to the commander-in-chief that's kind of a problem and um I'm just kind of confused as to why not that many people seem to be noting this but either way very kinetic week in Washington so let's go ahead and move out west uh talk about another controversy that's kind of developing this has been more of a thing that has been focused on by a lot of people out west and some of the more open lands around the nation but this is a a controversy that has erupted from the White House and the department of interior and the Department of Housing and Urban Development announcing that they are from what I can understand essentially trying to sell off America's public lands to put in cheap housing I know not the most popular way of phrasing it I know it seems rather biased but I would rather strongly encourage you to take a look at the primary source the website uh from the Department of interior they published a video and a longer text based article on essentially trying to turn America's BLM lands uh specifically they're targeting specifically rural areas for urbanized development specifically to put in what sounds to me like Section 8 housing now I I I don't know if that's true but it's what it sounds like so I'm definitely open to other interpretations but it it certainly seems like um that's what's uh going on so so yeah just something to keep in mind something to to be mindful of especially if you live out west near some public land moving around the nation did want to highlight the recent attacks on Tesla vehicles dealerships people who own Teslas and so on and so forth uh here is a map showing the General locations of all of these attacks that have occurred over the past uh few weeks really and as we can see it's it's fairly uh fairly nationwide at this point so I know that a lot of very big social media accounts especially Elon Musk himself have stated that this is a coordinated and well-funded attack I have not seen any indications of that this seems to be like just local antifa Usual Suspects targeting things because they can at most you might have a group of three or four people a local cell in a local city uh to try to attack Tesla locations but for the most part we're not seeing the kind of roving uh flown in protesters demonstrators riers uh kind of thing like we saw over the past few years these are more along the lines of just local people who are attacking these sites in their local areas you can see this based on where they are arrested they're not they don't have like mailing addresses based in other states they're all local people who have been arrested so far moving overseas let's touch on Western Europe for just a moment again diplomatic tensions have remained fairly constant since the American election but lately there have been a little bit of tit fortat kind of diplomatic actions the latest round of sort of push back or poking of the United States has been in the form of several Nations issuing Travel warnings for their citizens that they may be detained and deported from the United States uh if they visit on a tourist Visa or something like that this is obviously more of a political thing than a real genuine concern however there were a few Germans who were detained at the border a couple of weeks ago or last week actually which has probably caused a little bit of an international spat but generally speaking uh this is more of a political thing than anything similarly the fire at he airport in London yesterday may be a case of politics entering into the more kinetic phase it's really hard to tell at this point the United Kingdom suffers much from the same kinds of problems as the United States and and many Western westernized Nations around the world in that when something happens when there's a critical infrastructure failure it's often very very hard to determine was this incompetence was this malice was this some kind of accident or some kind of deliberate action clearly authorities thought that the he throw fire was more of a terrorist attack sort of thing as the counterterrorism police were leading the investigation at first I don't know if that's continued on of course this is speculative but it seems like the counterterrorist guys have just kind of moved on from this and they're kind of treating it more along the lines of a just an accident or some some other kind of not terrorism related incident hard to say though however because of the suspicious timing with this and actions throughout Eastern Europe but once again uh the United Kingdom suffers from much the same thing as the United States so for instance a lot of British politicians are pointing out or at least they're making the accusations I cannot vouch for the veracity of this information but the accusations are being made that he thr airport not only did they put their emergency backup generators at the same site like physically located next to each other and next to to the electrical substation that caught fire uh there are some accusations that they actually removed a lot of their diesel generator support in in favor of biomass generators now again I cannot vouch for any of that I don't know uh if that's true or not but the accusations are being made I guess we'll find out but generally speaking what is quite clear is that whatever generators were on site were located at the actual substation that caught fire and thus were also impacted by the fire so yeah a lot of egg on faces over this one is kind of embarrassing but uh I'd be very interested to read the incident report or whatever investigation comes about there might there might even be an inquiry over this I don't know but he provides a lot of money for the nation so this this airport going down for almost a full day that's pretty devastating when it comes to the economic impact so a lot of attention is going to be placed on this I I think moving over to Eastern Europe it seems like it's getting harder to determine how close we are to a peace deal coming to fruition or or any even just a ceasefire of some kind this has not been made any any better by the United States continuing to fund and uh send shipments to Ukraine just like before uh the election this has not really done anything to kind of push a a peace agreement but that kind of stuff aside one of the things that has really kind of inflamed tensions is the attack on the Les operating base in Russia so a few days ago Ukraine conducted a drone attack on engel's Main operating base once again uh down in Southwestern Russia now I know this may not seem very significant to a lot of people and this has happened multiple times before however this latest attack uh was rather substantial so let's take a look at this via the imagery that we have courtesy of maxar now for the previous strikes we didn't really have this capability or we had the capability but there was very little interest in it but now we have actually maxar imagery really good civilian commercial imagery of the section of the base at Engles that was struck so here we have the before picture before the Drone strike was conducted and here we have afterwards and as we can see this this section of the base was uh quite literally decimated uh we can see here I I'm of course no imagery expert but just for those of you who may have a hard time seeing the image here I've highlighted all the buildings that were uh rather kinetically destroyed by the Ukrainian drone strike and just in the context of where this particular site is located at Eng Les this Annex is located just to the east of the runway so once again nothing particularly new however it is interesting because I don't think a lot of Americans or even Western Europeans understand the significance of this especially in the context of what it means for a superpowers main operating base to be attacked really at all and what I mean by that is if we zoom out just a little bit and if we understand the history of engel's main operating base we might start to understand that this is not just any ordinary base this is a military base where Russia stores nuclear weapons so this is one of Russia's uh cream of the crop kind of military bases they only have two main operating bases one in the East and one in the west this one going all the way back to the Soviet Union their main Doctrine was to uh basically load a lot of their aircraft with nuclear weapons and then deploy them from these main operating bases to forward operating bases to attack those pesky Americans right over maybe say a polar route or something like like that of course this isn't really that much of a risk anymore these days however Russia still does store nuclear weapons here this is The Saratov 63 nuclear weapon storage facility and they have taken a lot of efforts to modernize it over the past few years especially since the Ukrainian war and so they are definitely still using it it is definitely a Hopping facility so I I know that it may be hard to kind of encapsulate this so let me just explain a the the analogy that I think of when I think of something like this this is equivalent in my mind uh sort of equivalent to the United States invading Iraq to do what we wanted to do in Iraq and Saddam somehow having the ability to drop a lot of bombs on Whitman Air Force Base in Missouri you know that's the kind of impact so imagine if we invaded Iraq to tople Saddam we're trying to drive to Baghdad right and Saddam Hussein ends up bombing whitean Air Force Base in Missouri where we have a lot of b2s and nuclear weapons so so maybe we can see how this is just a little bit more concerning than the average tit fortat kind of thing in a regional War like it or not a superpower being involved in a war is a very serious thing it's a very serious thing whether it's Justified or not I'm I'm not trying to take any side on this the issue is is that now we're starting to see some pretty serious things happen a little bit more routinely and a little bit more seriously of course the pro Ukraine guys will say well if Russia didn't want to have their nuclear base targeted then they shouldn't have started the war they can say that all they want to but it's not going to do anybody any good if a nuclear bun ER gets struck and we have a very serious problem on our hands I don't think any of us are going to feel very good typing away our snarky comments on Twitter if that were to happen so either way the United States is facilitating a small Regional power attacking the nuclear bases of a larger superpower and it seems like because we've had this election and it's okay because we now have new political leadership and it's okay because pie is around the corner well no it's not uh we it we may be hopeful for that and the past few weeks have shown that we're closer to peace than we have been in four years but that doesn't necessarily mean that at the last minute things aren't going to get very risky and right now the war in Ukraine is entering its riskiest phase it was extremely risky right in the very very beginning those first couple of weeks of the war and now it's going to be very very risky at the very end of it because Ukraine is exceptionally desperate rightly or wrongly that's what they are and the United States has feed has been feeding that desperation for a very long time so they struck an Annex at Eng Les today they may strike zerov 63 tomorrow who knows you know and I'm just a little bit concerned about that and I'm a little bit concerned that nobody else is concerned if that makes any sense so of course there's it's not like there's anything we can do about it but it's something to be mindful of that yeah don't don't get complacent here don't don't think that just because we have very real chances for peace does not necessarily mean that at the last minute that peace can't be yanked away and this thing uh get get kinetic once again so a lot of people are in the the attitude of well I'll believe there will be a ceasefire when I see it I'm kind of in that camp a little bit too but we we don't want to be entirely that pessimistic I guess but we're definitely entering into the phase again where something happening halfway around the world can definitely impact us here at home uh especially if we have vulnerabilities to our electrical substations maybe at airports if you know what I'm saying so so definitely a case of we're not out of the woods just yet same story in the Middle East where turkey appears to be experiencing quite a bit of civil unrest due to president erdoan essentially just arresting all of his political opposition this is not entirely surprising at all and if you check out a lot of Turkish social media accounts not not a lot of people are surprised by this a lot there's a lot of people upset by it but not a lot of people surprised this does happen every few years but regardless of how normal this is in Turkey it's very important to remember in the context of what's happened in Syria we've had a government overthrown in Syria we're looking at uh very interesting times in Romania as well and now turkey may be up next for a more um I don't know external color Revolution kind of effort now from from what I can tell it looks like most of the consternation within turkey is very domestic and very organic unlike the developments in Romania to to cancel the elections there and unlike in Syria where well obviously that's a long longer story but in Turkey it seems like it's more along the lines of a real legitimate protest effort so it's something to be aware of especially considering you know a lot of people don't care about turkey but turkey is a NATO member and you know there's a potential for some kind of American involvement there I guess at some point but for the most part it just kind of seems like it'll probably fizzle out but who knows so also down in the Gaza Israel region the ceasefire is over and the war is back on in full force as expected Yemen has uh conducted a few attacks with cruise missiles and drones over the past few days unknown success rate seems like fairly unsuccessful otherwise we would probably see uh them claiming some level of success Yemen's a long way from Israel and their missiles have traditionally been intercepted by the American Navy in the Red Sea protests are fairly common throughout Israel uh in some places but the protests are generally not for the reasons that people tend to think they are and in the context of the rest of the region the United States has uh very clearly established a new red line for the Iranians which generally is summarized best I think by saying the any yeni attack will be considered to be an attack by the Iranians because the Iranians support the yeni or the houi government it's a tail as all this time uh very very similar to the past few years of of conflict in the region yeah I just wanted to kind of point that out because like I said a few weeks ago you can have peace two ways uh you can have peace through a negotiated peace and a negotiated uh cessation of fighting or you can have peace by complete and total dominating victory and I think we it's very clear now as what the American policy is uh in the region so moving over to the Far East theater I wanted to briefly mention something that came out a few weeks ago uh I've touched on this before but because these images have circulated on social media uh over the past few days I think it's very interesting so I'll kind of mention it so China has been busy over the past few years and they have implemented this sort of new idea for landing craft Landing barges and we have recently seen the so-called sea Trials of these devices so so these gigantic machines are used to land resources on a beach and so you can very very very clearly just by looking at the images you can see what these devices are to be used for like many people have noted before these are very likely to be used uh in a uh potential conflict with Taiwan now we can see the various artist renderings of what this type of invasion might be might look like using these types of craft but this is one of those things where you see the one image you see the videos and you think that's interesting because for for many of you out there especially the Marines and anyone who has any sort of primitive knowledge of amphibious operations anyone who's really seen the movie Saving Private Ryan can look at this and and form very very strong opinions about uh the potential success rate of these particular devices but I'm very very curious to read about what China's what mentality why do they think this is going to work essentially I want to know why do they think this will not get immediately sunk within 38 seconds of getting anywhere near the coast like why do they think this will work because clearly they do think it's going to work these things probably cost hundreds of millions of dollars to build so es well I mean at least the fleet we've seen so far so I why why do they think this is is going to work I don't know but they clearly do um they're not building these things just as on a farce they're not building these things just to trick us I mean they could be but this is a pretty big investment for just a just a faint or some kind of deception operation but anyway very interesting uh I'm sure that we will uh see a lot more of this in the future we'll see how many more they build this could also just be a proof of concept to see if something like this would work I mean China has no problem sacrificing most of their population in a war but we also have to remember that China's never really waged an amphibious war or or really any War at all ever so it's very interesting to see the doctrine points uh being made by a second world nation that hasn't really gotten any combat experience with amphibious operations so yeah I guess we'll have to see what they do with this I'm going to you know obviously keep an eye on this to see how this works I don't necessarily think this is an imminent indicator of of an invasion uh so for those of you guys remember my old stoplight chart uh for Invasion indicators uh this is an indicator of uh they're rather serious about Taiwan but this I don't think this is an indicator of them IM like getting ready to imminently roll these up to Taiwan beaches I mean it could be but uh it doesn't seem like it's going to work out super well and they're going to need a few thousand more of these I think they've got five so far but anyway I guess we'll see how it how it works and uh be very interested to see they're testing on these cuz it's not like they can hide them so we'll have good satellite images of these as they go through their testing phases and as the Chinese learn a lot of new things so very interesting to see though so that's all I have for today let's move on to the intercepted ghostnet reports again uh fairly light week for news but a lot of people testing which is good uh a lot of people uh staying on for a lot longer uh than normal and uh just kind of chatting back and forth with a lot of other people which is great to see a lot of call signs logged we can see a few people here talking about how many call signs they've seen throughout the communications window and a few people cut and pasted a condensed vers of the wire report for that day which is good it's also great to see people pushing the obsidian link so that people can get the full report if they wanted it it's probably easier to do that but again when it comes to off-grid kind of information sharing that there's a lot of different ways to to skin that cat right so so yeah pretty interesting week I've been putting in a lot of time working on a lot of updates to the ghostnet document and program and all kinds of things but it's going to be a long time before I have anything to share on that front so so again we don't want to slip into complacency and just say ah well it's done no it's it's not done there are a lot of a lot of improvements that are being made I'm working on it um I've got to write a lot of uh stuff to make this a lot more well-rounded than it is uh even though right by now the tactical community is well aware of the advantages of using night vision devices simply put night vision devices might not guarantee mission success but not having night vision will result in a person being seriously disadvantaged at night or will it are there situations in which natural night adaptation is superior to having a night vision device and how does natural night vision work in conjunction with traditional night vision devices today we're going to examine the world's first night vision device and see what techniques can be used to improve the natural night adaptation of the human eye as one might imagine there is a lot of urban legend surrounding the concept of natural night vision so hopefully today we can provide a well-rounded explanation of the topic and encourage everyone to take a closer look at old school doctrines surrounding night adaptation and up first some science the human eye and its arrangement in the dome piece is host to many fascinating processes so let's take a look at how the human eye works normally under normal conditions light originates from the sun bounces off of an object and gets blasted into your noggin the light gets place you see the retina contains two types of photoreceptors photoreceptor is just a fancy name for the type of cells that can convert light to electrical signals the retina contains two types of photoreceptors rods and cones cones are the pretty boys cones only work out in bright light where everyone can see them there aren't many of them only 5 million cones to over 100 million rods but they get all the credit because cones are what allow you to see in color but when the spotlights turn off and it's too dark to take instagram photos cones become totally ineffective that's where rods come in rods are the hard workers they function in darkness just fine the always forgotten but never by the vc rods are the workhorses of the night they are also what allow us to see in black and white this is why when your mom flips the light off in your basement you can't really see colors only the outlines of highly contrasting objects or different shades of gray this is due to the purkinje effect also pronounced perchini by those more cultured than i the purkinje effect is sometimes also referred to as the purkinje shift effect this is the phenomenon of the human eye tending to have higher sensitivity towards the blue end of the electromagnetic spectrum at lower illumination levels in other words the human eye has trouble distinguishing between certain colors under progressively dark conditions remember the internet sensation of this particular image this dress a while back some people see a black and blue dress and other people say the color is white and gold the purkinje shift effect has been offered up as an explanation of why people have different reactions to seeing the photo based on how dark adapted their eyes are in other words the ambient lighting in which a person is located might determine what image they see if the brightness on their phone is turned way up they might see a white and gold dress but if their brightness is turned way down and their eyes are beginning to adapt to the darkness they might see a blue and black dress sure this specific example is an optical illusion in many ways but the purkinje effect is one explanation that has been offered up for this internet craze and examining how differently colors appear to the human eye under varying lighting conditions is very handy for the field of camouflage but as we mentioned dark adaptation takes time this is because our mighty rods need a special chemical to function just like we all need a mighty scoop or three of protein to grow big and strong the rods in our eyes also need a little sip of protein to function but instead of consuming protein our rods make it themselves this go-go juice is comprised of a protein called rhodopsin now rhodopsin is a bit shy and only likes to work out in complete darkness in fact any light whatsoever will cause a adoption to decay away pretty much instantly rhodopsin also takes a while to produce usually several hours this is why it takes a long time for your eyes to reach peak effectiveness for seeing in the dark this will be important to remember later so to recap for those that are a little slow on the uptake like me in the human eye we have two types of photoreceptor cells cones and rods cones allow us to see in color but don't work that well in the dark rods allow us to see better in the dark but only work in black and white rods need a special protein called rhodopsin to function and rhodopsin takes a long time to make so taking all of this science stuff into account how does the night adaptation process work well it's pretty simple just stay in the dark for a while that's really it the eye will naturally adjust to darkness as best it can the rods in the retina juicing up with rhodopsin to reach peak effectiveness in a few hours remember rhodopsin decays away to nothing pretty much instantly upon the eye taking in light so when you're trying to adapt your eyes to the darkness go sit in the dark for 30 to 45 minutes oh and one more thing stay off of your phone i know how much of a challenge that might be but tiktok and snapchat can wait for half an hour even if you pull out your phone for just a second to see who liked your post on instagram that is enough to ruin your natural night adaptation no turning down the brightness on your phone will not work it will help for sure but no phone screen on the planet can get dim enough to allow you to use your phone in the dark while retaining your natural night vision but for those of you who actually have to use your phone in the dark for tactical reasons fear not there are a couple of things you can do to make it so that you can use your phone in the dark without blinding yourself too much we will talk about that in just a minute when it comes to biology the human eye is a fascinating bit of engineering and you can see the sort of primal origins of how the human body has evolved for example our eyes are forward facing they're situated to look forward in the skull this allows us to have better depth perception and allows for natural range finding skills that might be needed to throw a spear for instance and at night well that's where things get super interesting for instance even though the rods and cones are both present in the eye they are concentrated in different zones different places in the eye remember how the cones are the pretty boys of the eye well where else would you expect to find them but right up front if we use parlance from night vision tubes the cones are mostly concentrated in zone 1 right in the center of our vision obviously cones are spread throughout the eye but most of them are concentrated here rods on the other hand are mostly concentrated in zones 2 and 3. this is very very important this means that your natural night adapted vision is most effective in your periphery unlike during the day your peripheral vision is best at night this is especially important to remember for trying to observe objects at night rather than trying to look directly at something look beside it or around it you can try this yourself and i guarantee the results will be surprising remember that the human eye is predisposed to seeing movement as well so when you're using your peripheral vision to see something in the dark don't just stare at a single point off to the side of it constantly keep your eye moving all around the target you'll find that if you stare at a fixed point beside an object and don't move it tends to disappear from view so keeping your eyes moving is an effective way to use your peripheral vision to view something in the dark remember the process of your eyes adapting to the darkness takes time it usually takes several hours for the rods to produce enough rhodopsin to be effective this is great biologically as the human eye can adapt at the same rate that the sun goes down more or less so that by the time the sun is set your eyes are adapted to the darkness it makes sense for the caveman right but in our modern world we don't have time for all that so what can we do well as usual history provides the answer human beings fought two global wars without the use of night vision devices and came up with some pretty interesting tricks the first of which is the concept of rigging for red ever since electrical lighting became common on sailing vessels the use of lighting has been a hot topic especially in the field of naval warfare generally speaking red lighting has been accepted as the standard for preserving the natural night adaptation of the human eye and the reason is pretty simple red light has less effect on the production of rhodopsin than white light remember how white light causes rhodopsin to decay well red light doesn't cause this decay the receptors don't react to red light technically it still does but to a lesser degree that's why red lighting has been touted as preserving night vision for over a century this is why all military naval vessels have the practice of rigging for red or turning all the lights red in certain areas this is usually done on the bridge lookout staging areas or really any compartment that directly leads to the exterior of the ship red lighting is frequently used for other reasons besides preserving night vision as well a lot of times red lighting is used because it's simply not as bright the human eye is less sensitive to red light so if you have a hundred lumen white light and a hundred lumen red light the red light will look a lot dimmer to the human eye it's simply softer on the eyes in regular white light that's why red lighting is frequently used in open bay temporary building or birthing areas in deployed environments it allows for 24 7 lighting that is bright enough to see by but not bright enough to ruin people's sleep but there are some downsides to using red lighting which we will cover in a separate video on tactical lighting but the cliff notes version is that red lighting when used all the time causes some serious problems eye fatigue depth perception problems psychological problems and the difficulty of reading maps are all issues that come from red light use red light will not solve all of your problems just using red lights or staying in red light only areas before going out into the darkness will help a lot and it's recommended to do but you will still need some time in the dark for your eyes to finally adjust despite these problems red light is still the standard and red lighting should generally be used whenever possible if you are trying to preserve your natural night adaptation a great tool to use that will help you with this are red light goggles basically just goggles that are tinted red this has been a standard tactic of naval lookouts for many many years and is a good way to start the process of adapting your eyes to darkness with red filtered goggles you can put them on about half an hour before you need to conduct operations and conduct your pre-mission checks get your gear together or whatever else you need to do this way you don't have to build a red light only staging area and you can use the normal lighting you have in your home red filtered goggles are also very handy for driving at night when trying to preserve night vision for me this is especially important since everyone in my area seems to prefer driving with their high beams on all the time so if i'm driving out to an observation post and for whatever reason i wanted to preserve my natural night adaptation wearing some red tinted goggles or glasses while driving really helps with this still not ideal and no amount of red filters will totally preserve your night vision but it does help a lot and since it's at night nobody will see how much of a weirdo you look like while driving with red tinted goggles as far as specific red light goggles these cannot be easily purchased because not many companies make them specifically for preserving night adaptation you can find goggles and glasses that are marketed towards the laser pointer crowd usually sold under the label of laser safety glasses you can find these high school science class wrap around glasses for really cheap we got these for about a dollar a piece from china as far as providing adequate safety against lasers i highly doubt it but they do provide a lot of benefit for night adapting your eyes they're not perfect because of the gaps they leave around the eyes and how cheaply they are made but it's better than nothing what is vastly more effective is to build your own red light goggles from an ordinary set of ballistic goggles these here were built from a set of us military issue good enough to get the government contract but not really that great revision locust goggles pretty much everyone that has deployed overseas in the past five to ten years has several sets of these lying around you can take the clear filters which come with the goggles and cover them with red tinted color correction light filter gels these are filters for photography lights and are again found everywhere for really cheap just as a side note since photography light gels are usually heat resistant they're really great for making your own red light filters for flashlights as well but back to the goggles all you have to do is draw the outline of the lens on the gel cut it out and put the goggles back together again using the clear filter sandwiching the red filter in wherever you can some goggles allow for this easier than others so you might need to tinker around with it for a bit on these particular goggles the filter fits on the outside a bit better than on the inside you could of course just leave out the clear filter as well but i find the clear filter adds a little bit of structural integrity that you really need plus it keeps your ballistic writing if that matters to you but whatever you do when you get everything assembled and jammed together you'll have a really effective set of red filtered goggles that you can still use during the day by taking the red filter off and if you have a little bit left over red tinted photography gel works as a field expedient cover for your phone's screen like we mentioned earlier phone screens are really really bad at allowing you to preserve your night vision but in the modern world where atac or offline mapping apps are the new hotness the use of smartphones is only going to increase in the battle space for better or worse especially for tasks like flying drones turning the brightness down can help using a night mode which tends to screen red also helps but what's really effective for us has been to use red photography gels on some phones and with some gels your ability to use your phone screen might be impeded but if you monkey around with it for a bit you can probably get it to work we tried several very cheap photography gels and we were able to get the phone screen to work just fine remember though it's not a good idea to have some janky construction getting in the way of using combat tools it would really really suck for you to crash your drone or not be able to see a troops in contact location because you taped up your phone screen poorly but if you're using your phone for less potentially life-threatening reasons jury rigging a red screen cover can be an effective way to keep your phone screen from ruining your night vision too much so to recap using red lights wherever possible and using red filtered goggles if you need to interact with normal white lighting are all effective ways to preserve one's own night adaptation now let's talk about some of the more controversial options that might or might not work in helping your natural night adaptation the first of which is what's generally called the pirate eye patch method and this one takes a bit of explaining several years ago this theory sprang up on the internet out of the debates surrounding the traditional stereotype of a pirate wearing an eye patch research has been done on many levels on this topic everyone from mythbusters to the always correct quora internet expert has weighed in on this theory the theory is that pirates wore an eye patch not because of an injury or disability but in order to maintain night adaptation for instance a pirate with two perfectly good eyes would then cover one of them up with an eye patch during a boarding event then when heading below decks on the captured ship the pirate would take the eye patch off or switch it to the other eye depending on what version of the myth you want to believe so that he would at least have one darkness adapted eye this way he could be more combat effective in the darkened areas of a ship again i must stress that this for the moment is a myth there is zero historical evidence to support this no historical records whatsoever that kind of indicate this might be true the only people that seem to consider this theory are the kind of people who also have a time slot on the history channel at 3 am so not exactly the best academic source to me this theory sounds exactly what you'd find in the depths of reddit or somewhere else on the internet meaning that it makes a lot of sense on paper but in reality it makes very little sense for one the interior of ships during the age of sale was not completely dark it was perfectly bright enough to conduct combat in if sailors were completely blinded upon going on deck that would present some serious hazards also internet warriors often forget the importance of depth perception when engaging in hand-to-hand combat i know it's a strange concept but swinging a katana around in your room alone does not accurately replicate the combat conditions of the 18th century sailor as with most internet-based combat theories the eye patch to preserve the night vision theory ignores a lot of the well-established doctrine and historical records on vessel boarding a person wearing an eye patch to preserve night vision in just one eye is creating so many problems for himself while only partially solving one minor issue that has little to no effect on actual combat depth perception and the loss of a significant portion of his field of vision is a major limiting factor in combat and all of that is given up just to see slightly better on a slightly dim lower deck i don't know it just doesn't seem very likely so sorry for the digression but this was worth talking about because this inevitably comes up whenever we're talking about natural night vision another series of myths and some quasi truths is in the field of supplements different vitamins or other supplements that might improve one's ability to see in dark conditions first up the myth that accidentally might have some actual validity and that myth is that eating carrots increases one's ability to see in the dark this myth is a gigantic can of worms that goes back to world war ii allied authorities mostly the british issued dozens of posters urging citizens to eat carrots because it would increase their ability to see in the dark during the blitz famous flying aces attributed their kills to their diet of carrots allowing them to see german aircraft in the dark skies over britain but this as some would say was a lie the entire story of carrots causing better night vision at night was a total propaganda story from the very start the reasoning behind this propaganda and mass cover-up is for two reasons for one encouraging people to eat carrots at a time when food insecurity was a significant threat for britain was very important just like famous athletes who have been selling bowls of wheaties for decades the idea was that a super cool flying ace could sell the idea of victory gardens to the general populace but that was really a side benefit the main reason for concocting this lie was to cover up the fact that the allies had finally created functional radar radio detection and ranging or radar in its early days was one of the most classified military projects of all time for both the allies and the axis both sides had been working on radar during the interwar years and during the war the battle of britain hastened the efforts to build better more accurate radar systems in the later years of the war the allies figured out a way to make radar equipment small enough to fit inside the nose of a fighter aircraft finally night fighters would have a way to find german aircraft in the dark skies over europe german aircraft which never stood a chance against radar but there was a huge problem if the germans realized that the british had radar in fighter aircraft they would certainly change their tactics which could make this significant advantage less effective but arguably the more significant risk was for the americans aircraft-based radar sets could also detect the periscopes of submarines for years german u-boats had thrived off the american east coast and the graveyard of the atlantic to this day stands as an attestation to their effectiveness but we can clearly see a sharp dip in the effectiveness of the german u-boat right around the summer time of 1943. this is due to a combination of things changes in convoys and advances in technology the cracking of the enigma code really helped but also the development of aircraft-based radar which could spot the periscope of a submarine even before they got close to a convoy and if we examine the diaries of u-boat sailors they were baffled at the time they frequently remarked that they would be sailing along in the roughest of seas or under an overcast sky and suddenly an aircraft would come out of nowhere heading right for them in the later parts of the war u-boat captains recall crash diving much more often usually in bad weather conditions when previously they had been able to sail on the surface without any trouble whatsoever obviously something was up the allies efforts to explain it away as simply high doses of carrots was a way to cover up the existence of radar for just a bit longer giving the allies a significant advantage whether or not the germans believed this or not who knows the germans had been working on radar for many years so they had to suspect something but in any case this historical tale has been an interesting story over the years however it turns out that this propaganda story might actually have some truth to it in retrospect the idea is that carrots contain a compound called beta-carotene which helps in the production of vitamin a and in the years since world war ii vitamin a has been medically proven to have positive impacts on cataracts as well as the treatment of night blindness so one can see the plausibility of vitamin a helping one's own natural night vision however the research that has been done does not really indicate this yes vitamin a can help someone with night blindness but medical research does not indicate that vitamin a will make a healthy person have superior night vision vitamin a can really only help someone who has an injury or disease it can't make a healthy person superman but if you are like me and don't trust any medical research these days you can try it yourself in a completely unscientific test i personally have taken vitamin a supplements for a few months and i have noticed no improvement on my night vision either in the time it takes for my eyes to become dark adapted or my visual acuity when fully dark adapted i've noticed no difference a few times i did notice a slight improvement in my ability to make it through the snell and eye chart but those effects were not repeatable or attributable to the vitamin a it could have been some other supplement i'm taking it could be that i simply drank more water that day who knows in other words it might have worked a little but i myself did not really notice any spectacular results so at least for me supplements to improve natural night vision are kind of hit or miss they might have some benefit in a clinical setting but in a tactical environment anything increasing one's night vision by margins that are only noticeable in a lab setting is not beneficial in other words if i did not notice a significant increase i'd say it's probably not really worth it but that's just me and that leads us to discussing the more boots on ground applications and considerations of natural night adaptation namely how natural night adaptation can be useful in real world scenarios and how natural night adaptation might still have some use in a world where night vision devices are the standard in warfare and for those of you that thought that natural night adaptation might be comparable to a night vision device i'm going to have to burst your bubble in a tactical setting natural night vision doesn't hold a candle to any modern night vision device there are no advantages of using natural night vision over modern night vision devices in most cases so trying to compare natural night vision to actual night vision devices that's kind of a non-starter there's really no debate there any night vision device is superior to even the best knight adapted eyes especially since natural night adaptation doesn't last long in warfare all it takes is a flare or a few muzzle flashes and that natural night adaptation is pretty much useless and once natural night adaptation is compromised that's pretty much the ball game in a firefight you would then have to either use supplementary white light flares or revert to a night vision device anyway for the rest of the fight also night adapted eyes do not pair very well with night vision devices using a night vision device will decimate your natural night adaptation normally this doesn't matter because you have a night vision device so why would you need night adapted eyes that's why natural night vision has been all but forgotten in the tactical community for such a long time so all of this being considered does natural night adaptation have a place in modern warfare well that's up for you to decide based on your own situations and to help make that decision let me tell you how i myself and the rest of the team here utilize natural night adaptation for me the stars quite literally have to align for natural night adaptation to be preferred nights that are super bright or in locations where there is a lot of air glow in the atmosphere are great for this airglow also called night glow is a topic that we will be discussing further but this is a phenomenon that occurs in the atmosphere that ensures that the night sky is never completely dark think of this as light pollution that is caused by the planet itself ordinarily this is not noticed by most people but in areas with zero human light pollution the effect is quite spectacular and using air glow to observe things at night has some potential another scenario is if i'm in a location and my mission is to spot aircraft these conditions can be great for using natural night vision because i can see aircraft silhouetted against the night sky from a long way away and doing traditional air searches of sectors with a night vision device that has a very small field of view would result in the aircraft's detection being delayed but if i'm just chilling in an observation post looking at the entire sky at once i can see aircraft even blacked out aircraft from a long way away and by the time the guy with the night vision device sees it well it's already on you right this is especially the case when trying to spot quadcopters or other small uas platforms the ukrainian war has proven how deadly these things are and by the time you hear one you don't have time to scan the whole sky for it and since these are usually really close to you you've got to deal with the focus of your night vision device and the small field of view to find a really small moving target it's just easier to keep your eyes dark adapted and use the naked eye to spot these devices in most cases but again that's just me and my own limited experiences granted in most situations a night vision device even with a small field of view might be preferred by some for this task but sometimes you need to see the whole sky at once to track multiple aircraft multiple uas platforms and if the night sky allows naked eye observation to be effective i prefer that of course keeping a night vision device close by just in case another time that traditional night adaptation might be preferred is camouflage detection now this one gets a little bit into backyard flood science so bear with me under the right circumstances detecting camouflage is easier with a dark adapted naked eye than with a night vision device again this is not true on lights that are so dark you can't see your hand in front of your face but i myself have been quite surprised as to how much farther out i can detect a stationary camouflaged target with my naked eye than through my night vision device especially if you're not running dual tubes so you have severely reduced depth perception but again this is just my own experience coupled with the experiences of the rest of the team here so it's not an exact science just wanted to point this out because night vision devices are serious force multipliers on the field but they are not magic and an over reliance on technology is perhaps not the best mentality to have these days another situation in which natural night adaptation might be preferred is when using binoculars now you might say hang on you can't use binoculars at night well actually you can you just have to have the right kind of binoculars night adapted eyes and a bit of moonlight is also preferable if there's interest we can cover using binoculars at night in a separate video but by and large magnified optics and night vision optics don't really mix that well yes it can be done and i myself am especially fond of using magnifiers with night vision optics however just using a regular pair of binoculars with objective lenses that are as large as possible that's just way better regular binoculars are way more crisp and sharp than using a night vision device with a magnifier and it's easier to overcome focusing issues in the darkness which is a really big problem with most optics in the dark it's really hard to focus on really fine details at an extreme distance it's a lot easier to do with a pair of regular binoculars if the conditions are right you know even if binoculars require a lot more light to be effective and do not work in all cases i still prefer them if i can use them so all in all yes there are situations that having no night vision might be preferable but there are some general tips number one is to recognize that night vision devices are superior in 99 of situations and in 99 of night time conditions so keep your expectations realistic and number two because of number one always keep a night vision device handy in case your natural night adaptation gets ruined and you need to conduct operations immediately also number three if you do not have a night vision device there are things you can do to improve your natural night adaptation avoid white light entirely and only use as much red light as you need when dark adapting your eyes use red tinted goggles or red light only areas for at least 20 minutes followed by at least 10 minutes in the dark to maximize your night adaptation and in conditions where the moonlight or air glow is significant such as in remote areas or at sea using natural night adaptation might be preferred over using a night vision device particularly for observing aircraft or very large sectors the bottom line with all of these examples is that everything that's been said about night vision kind of gets blurred and this kind of goes back to the nature of modern warfare and the popularity of night vision devices on the internet just think back over the years and remember how the tactical community has changed things have changed and now night vision devices are solidified as an important piece of gear right up there with medical gear and rifles themselves but even though night vision devices are super popular these days we also have to keep things in perspective yes we here and countless others have been singing the praises of night vision as a concept and stressing the need for it in modern warfare as far as we're concerned there is no debate over night vision you definitely need it but in using such strong language we forget the second part of that sentence yes you need night vision devices but that alone will not save you and if there's one lesson that must be learned right now by all armed forces around the planet it is this the nature of warfare has changed in a fifth generation war rigidly adhering to paragraphs in a warfare publication will get you killed now more than ever all of the warfare doctrine that has been taught over the years is more of a guideline than actual rules especially in terms of things like night vision so the next time you're at ntc sitting in a fighting position with your battle buddy bored out of your mind try letting your battle buddy scan the sector with the thermals or night vision device and you take the binoculars and start night adapting your eyes and see what happens if you're a platoon leader on a training night patrol and the conditions are right try having every third guy run without their night vision device and see what benefits that brings or what problems it causes you might be surprised with the results or you might not you never know until you try the next time you're out training or even just camping and the moonlight is pretty bright try hiking without your night vision devices and see how it goes again until you try you'll never know how effective that might be this practice is vital to understanding the next topic knowing when to switch from night adapted naked eyes to a night vision device one of the biggest risks of using natural night vision is changing light conditions that go unnoticed in other words the night getting so dark that you can't see threats coming and because your eyes are dark adapted you don't notice understanding when dark adapted eyes become a liability instead of a benefit is a skill that will only come with practice too often our doctrine tells us that as soon as it gets dark go on nods but a person truly skilled in warfare will be able to operate without nods for quite some time and if necessary switch to nods at the exact moment that dark adapted eyes are no longer beneficial and this entire process being fluid natural and automatic without any degradation of combat capabilities is the goal that we should all work towards so try it out yourself and see what happens try honing your skills now while you still can especially knowing when it gets too dark and when it's time to switch to night vision devices and remember to have fun learning these skills too over the past couple of years we and many others have stressed how desperately we need to learn things but at the same time everyone gets to the point that they've grown at training opportunities especially since everything is a training event these days so keep it casual practice these skills when you're hurrying up and waiting or when you're otherwise not doing much you don't have to drag out a powerpoint full of bulletized learning objectives every time your team has 20 minutes of downtime and you don't have to live your life by memorizing warfare publications that are 20 years out of date sometimes questioning those manuals in a productive professional way is the better move so try it out and see what works you never know sometimes it might be more beneficial to fight in the shade
